Answering Ankara’s Call for Help, University Researchers Locate Ancient Cargo Remains and Maybe a Turkish Atlantis Subaqueous exploration. Divers from the University of Haifa archeology team map out the site of their “dig” off Liman Tepe in Turkey.
A three-week expedition in response to Ankara University’s request for the University of Haifa’s cooperation this summer in conducting underwater explorations off Urla, a city some 35 kilometers southwest of Izmir, led to surprising discoveries. One such find might be termed the cargo remains of a 5th century BCE “bulk carrier.” Israeli and Turkish underwater explorers wade into the deep. The University’s logo is clearly visible on the oxygen tanks “At the same time we tried to understand the possible elements which are now positioned under water, whether they were originally terrestial or underwater constructions. We, at the University of Haifa’s Maritime Institute, have had plenty of experience in both fields, especially harbor constructions and underwater geological research. That’s why they called on us.” The University’s Institute of Maritime Studies and the Dept. of Maritime Civilzations have for a number of years been conducting wide-ranging coastal and underwater excavations along Israel’s northern Mediterranean shore: in the ancient harbor of Caesarea, at Tel Akko (Acre), Tel Nami, and the shipwrecks at Ma’agan Mikhael and Dor (Tantura).

Media: Hardcover Publisher: Newmarket Press Salesrank: Release Date: February, 2002 Author: Daniel Lenihan Customer Reviews: The Sometimes Extreme Adventures Of An Underwater Ranger submerged, enlightening information, remarkable stories Although I know little of underwater archeaology, I have done my share of contract land archeaology and am an avid sport diver. Mr. Lenihan gives bonechilling acounts of diving situations involving caves, polluted waters and other truly extreme variables. I have been a scuba diver here in San Diego for over thirty years and I have come with time to admit my limits. This man, wether crazy or not, has defied most the limits I am aware of, but you can't say he was clueless, he's still here to write this book. Being quite involved in the diving community for some time and also associated with some west coast based archaeologist, I have heard nothing but high regards for this mans reliability and profesionalism as an archaeologist. I have read some of the reviews by other so called sport divers who are down on Mr. Lenihan. I am angered by their comments and dissappointed by their ethics treating ships. Essentially, they are treasure hunters and thier ethics are, "the gold I find while destroying sites for other divers is mine!" I fully admit that they know more about ship wreck diving than myself although I doubt Mr. Lenihan is in jeopardy of being overwhelmed by their "unselfish principles" or vast historical knowledge of the sites they desecrate. From the very positive articles I have read in such magazines as "Skindiver" or "Sportdiver" magazine, I am more willing to take them seriously. But thats just me. For anyone interested at all in the ethics of preservation or the insanity of adventure, wether you agree or not, this book will probably fullfill alot of those curiosities.

A Centre on Marine Archeology is created
A Centre on Marine Archeology is being created. It is to take care for the protection, conservation and the popularization of our underwater cultural heritage. The Centre is to catalogue all submerged archeological sites on Bulgarian territory and develop expert, consulting, research and educational activity. The organization of international seminars on underwater archeology is envisaged. By creating that cultural institute, our country synchronizes its activity with the UNESCO member states and the forthcoming signing of the international convention on the conservation of underwater cultural heritage.

August 25, 1997 Seventeen miles off the Georgia coast and 58 feet below the water’s surface lies a 17.5 square mile marine protected area with limestone and sandstone rock ledges known as Gray's reef. The reef and its surrounding waters became part of the National Marine Sanctuary Program in January of 1981. As a habitat, this sanctuary is unlike other reef sites in the program because it is not a tropical coral reef but a live-bottom rock reef. However, the biology of this sanctuary is not the only thing that sets it apart from other sanctuaries in the program.
Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary
is unique because of the wealth of information scientists have gathered from its reef. It has yielded clues to what life was like thousands of years ago. This "paleo-environment" shows that 12,000 years ago the area was dry landan ice age gripped the Earth, water was frozen in glaciers, and the oceans shrank. When the earth warmed up land masses once again became submerged and water covered the area that is now Gray's reef.
So it's up to underwater divers to find clues to the past - and they have done an incredible job. From plant pollen to bone fragments this underwater island speaks volumes about the formation of life and civilization off our US coasts.

About Us These are the aims and purposes of the Wisconsin Underwater
Archeology Association since its founding in 1990:
  • Provide access to information pertaining to underwater archeology statewide.
WUAA's semi-annual meetings (spring and fall) are held around the state, and incorporate a training workshop. Past meetings have taken place at the Milwaukee Public Library, Door County Library, UW-Oshkosh Archaeology Lab, State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Lottie Cooper Shipwreck Exhibit in Sheboygan, and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc. Here, WUAA members participated in workshops in underwater archaeological site mapping, historic ship construction methods, use of archives in conducting historical research, artifact dating and identification, and other topics. Workshop participants have an opportunity to visit various research facilities, get behind the scenes tours of facilities and collections, meet and talk with staff, learn about upcoming training and fieldwork opportunities, and just have fun meeting new people!
  • Provide training to perform underwater site surveys.

T he Queen Anne's Revenge ran aground at Topsail Inlet (now Beaufort Inlet) in June of 1718, an unlikely ending for a reign of terror directed by the pirate ship's captain, Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard. Some historians contend Blackbeard intentionally sacrificed the ship to steal from and abandon his own crew, which at one time numbered as many as 300. The 100-foot-long ship was also abandoned, left behind to be taken by storms and by the tide. rests in 22 feet of water, just a mile from the North Carolina shore. The remains, once the command of the most notorious buccaneer of his swashbuckling time, have lain silent for almost 300 years. When the wreck was discovered in 1996, speculation arose that chests of gold and jewels would be found nearby. Blackbeard left none of his stolen riches behind. But in terms of science, the treasures being unearthed today are worth their weight in gold.
