Boomerangs
Boomerangs, which are basically curved, aerodynamically enhanced sticks, have long been in use as hunting tools in many countries (including India). But the returning boomerang, used as an amusing toy by Australian aboriginals, has attracted much attention for nearly two centuries. It is perhaps best seen as a flying top that uses aerodynamic and gyroscopic forces for 'steering' it back to the thrower. A small collection of boomerangs acquired during visits to Australia will be on display.

The Language of the Dancing Bees
Honeybees live in large colonies consisting of tens of thousands of worker bees, a few drones and a single queen. The older worker bees specialize in surveying the environment of the colony for nectar, pollen, water and propolis. Upon finding a profitable resource, worker bees return to their colonies and recruit other workers for transporting the discovered material to the nest. To do so, honeybees use a dance language. Being a system of communication involving arbitrary symbolic conventions, the honey bee dance language is thought to be closer to human language than anything else ever used by animals. In this talk I will introduce the honeybees, describe the properties of their dance language and review recent research aimed at convincing skeptics that honey bees do indeed use the information contained in the dance language to locate food and other resources.

In Memoriam
It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of a long time friend of
MPL and SIO. Mildred Rogers was 86 when she passed away a few weeks ago.
Mildred came to work for SIO starting as Dr. Roger Revelle's secretary on
July 28, 1952. After four years, she joined the Marine Physical Laboratory
as Dr. Fred Spiess' secretary, and from 1966-1977 she worked directly under
Dr. George Shor as our Sverdrup Hall secretary. She retired September 30,
1977, after 25 years of service to SIO/UCSD, and enjoyed her retirement
immensely. She was a frequent attendee at our MPL Christmas parties and we last saw her at Fred Spiess' 80th birthday party. There was never a dull moment with Mildred around as she would spark up a conversation and talk for hours. We will greatly miss her.

My project I believe will be a combination of written items derived from the data I plan to obtain, along with some pictorial items. Due to the fact that the topic of underwater marine archeology is tremendously broad, the concentration of my research will come from various shipwreck sites. For myself the interest in this subject arises from curiosity about previous generations of people, along with an interest in the sea. Presently I have obtained various web sites that pertain to this topic. As I continue with my research I plan to find more detailed data as to the purpose, interest, and necessity for archeologist to explore this underwater realm.
