"We Are All Alone In Indian Country"
That was how we described it when we talked among ourselves in the 1960s. While not politically correct in the '90s, it summarized how 5,000 select CAC/CAP Marines and Navy Corpsmen felt as they stood for the first time in an isolated Vietnamese village, surrounded by jungle, terrifying booby-traps, and thousands of supposedly hostile Vietnamese civilians. They were part of the Marine Corps Combined Action Program (CAP). The CAP program placed a squad of Marines and one Navy Corpsman in villages from Chu Lai to the DMZ in South Vietnam from 1965 to 1971. Images of fanatical Viet Cong pouring out of the jungles and rice paddies hovered in the minds of each of us as we hunkered down for our first night of sleep in such hostile territory. That first night, each new Marine and Corpsman counted the friendly faces of as few as 7 Americans, then looked with mixed emotions at a poorly equipped platoon of Vietnamese Popular Forces, the local village "militia". Each Marine or Corpsman certainly pondered the distance to the nearest American military base. Each calculated how long it would take for help to arrive. Each knew that, when needed, help would probably not arrive in time.

Lack of a gun or a knife does not mean that Marines are without weapons. Marines know how to make weapons out of whatever resources are available. A guitar string, boot lace, medical tape, plastic closing line can be used as a garrote; a pot of hot coffee over the head, a match or lighter under a can of hair spray as a flame thrower, a chemical fire extinguisher used as a club or to freeze the assailant's face. A ballpoint pen driven into the enemies' eyes or ears. The list could go on and on and is only limited by one's imagination. The point is, if a Marine identifies danger, by his training experience he has both the right and responsibility to take immediate action. Yes, if a Marine was on each of those flights, they still might have crashed, but I just don't believe that they would have ever reached their intended targets. Unfortunately, not even all American's love the Marine Corps, its mission, and what it has done and can do for the American people. Over the past years, there has been a concerted effort of non-Marines to make our Corps more Politically Correct. These people have a social agenda that they feel is more important than national security. I ask you to fight this to the end. Political correctness is more than partly responsible for many of the problems we have today.

United States Marine Corps During World War 2, Queen Elizabeth Park was the site of the largest United States Marine Corps camp in New Zealand. The camp housed more than 20,000 men in and around the present park boundaries. QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK
During the war the threat of Japanese invasion was great. While many of our armed forces were engaged in battle in Europe and North Africa, people feared the worst. With a commitment to freedom, President Roosevelt promised Winston Churchill that the United States would protect allied countries.
For the first time in history New Zealand was to become host to the troops of foreign ally. Camps were set up throughout New Zealand for forces to use as bases for recuperation, training and preparation before embarking for battle.
To recapture life at the camps and to recognise the aid the United States Marines gave to our region, the Wellington Regional Council has erected a commemorative plaque, flags and interpretation panels at Queen Elizabeth Park.
CAMP BUILDING
In April 1942 the Public Works Department, already busy with its own works, were given six weeks to build and set up camps to house 1st and 2nd Divisions of the United States Marines.

(NARA 111-SC-83087) In 1900 a crisis erupted in China as the "Boxers" increased their resistance to foreign influence and presence. By the end of the nineteenth century, several countries had already established spheres of influence in China. In the fall of 1899, Secretary of State John Hay wrote that the United States, a late arrival, wanted to maintain an "open door policy" in China. If the Boxers succeeded in pushing the United States and other foreign countries out, this newly opened door could soon be shut.

That's message educators get at Marine Corps boot camp By ADD SEYMOUR JR.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Brant Sanderlin / AJC Staff Sgt. Velma Togiola yells the cadence to educators from Georgia and Louisiana as they march to the next demonstration at boot camp in Parris Island, S.C., last week. PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. Kenyetta Kendrick stares out the window at marshes as the bus carrying her and 72 other Georgia and Louisiana educators heads toward the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. "It's too early," Kendrick says, just before 7 a.m. "Physical training for me is getting up. I ain't feeling this." The Marine Corps hopes that eventually she will. It's offering an all-expenses-paid taste of boot camp so that educators will promote the military as enthusiastically as they sell the promise of a college degree. Armed with a new and little-known federal mandate that gives recruiters access to the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the nation's high school students, all four branches of the military have stepped up efforts to compete with colleges and businesses.

USA Sets Up New Military Base In Southern Afghanistan
The lift of US Marines elements to the aerodrome of Kandagar situated 15 kilometres south-east of the city to set up a new American military base began in the morning on Friday, the Qatari Al-Jazeera TV company reported.
The Marines whose number is not known are transported by helicopters from Jelalabad.
The first base which has been named Reno was set up 65 kilometres north-east of Kandagar at an abandoned runway.
On Thursday, American helicopters also started participating in the operation of Pashtun tribes in the Tora Bora area. It was earlier reported that about 60 British and 40 American commandos, wearing Pashtun clothes, are operating there.
By the estimate of Pashtun field commanders, about 700 militants of the Al-Qaeda organisation are hiding in the Tora Bora (40 kilometres south of Jelalabad) and Melawa (30 kilometres south of it) areas.
