The MARS cipher - IBM submission to AES MARS is now available worldwide under a royalty-free license from Tivoli . Read the press release or contact Ron Silletti at 914-765-4373 for more details. May 19, 2000: Here is the latest version of our "final comments" (in MS word PDF , or Postscript format). Also, here are two technical notes: one about linear analysis ( postscript pdf ) and the other about key-agility ( postscript pdf A note regarding repeated differences in the MARS s-box is available here August 11, 1999: MARS was chosen as a finalist in the AES selection process. A suggested "tweak" in the key-setup routine of MARS was accepted by NIST. A pseudocode of the new key-setup rutine is available here. Also, you can find here the new test vectors for MARS. MARS is a shared-key (symmetric) block cipher, supporting 128-bit blocks and variable key size. It is designed to take advantage of the powerful operations supported in today's computers, resulting in a much improved security/performance tradeoff over existing ciphers. As a result, MARS offers better security than triple DES while running significantly faster than single DES. The current C implementation runs at rates of about 65 Mbit/sec. on a 200 MHz Pentium-Pro, and 85 Mbit/sec. on a 200 MHz PowerPC. In hardware, MARS can achieve a 10X speedup factor. Still, both hardware and software implementations of MARS are remarkably compact, and easily fit on a smartcard and in other limited-resource environments.

Researchers have released new evidence that strengthens their original hypothesis concerning ancient life on Mars. Researchers have also found magnetic material in a 4.5-billion-year-old Martian meteorite that could only have been produced by bacteria.
As world history illustrates, humans are compelled to discover new frontiers. Our exploration of the space frontier has already begun. Robotic missions and new technology are the first steps toward expanding human presence in the solar system. Human missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond may become a reality in the 21st century, and NASA is leading the way. The world's attention is focused on the exploration of the solar system more strongly now than ever before. The discovery of possible ancient life on Mars and the Pathfinder examinations are credited with much of that attention.

ANCIENT LIFE STUDIES This shows a possible elongated fossilized Martian cell on the surface of a clay mineral inside a Martian meteorite. Other possible fossilized microbes are partly embedded in the clay mineral. This clay mineral is now known to have formed on Mars about 700 million years ago.
A NASA research team of scientists at the Johnson Space Center and at Stanford University has found evidence that strongly suggests primitive life may have existed on Mars more than 3.6 billion years ago. The NASA-funded team found the first organic molecules thought to be of Martian origin; several mineral features characteristic of biological activity; and possible microscopic fossils of primitive, bacteria-like organisms inside of an ancient Martian rock that fell to Earth as a meteorite. This array of indirect evidence of past life was reported in the Aug. 16, 1996 issue of the journal Science , presenting the investigation to the scientific community at large to reach a future consensus that will either confirm or deny the team's conclusion.

This is the home page for the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Mobile Autonomous Robot Software (MARS) project at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT) The GT MARS project involves multi-level learning in hybrid deliberative/reactive mobile robot architectural software systems. We are developing revolutionary learning methods in the context of proven DARPA-developed software to accomplish complex adaptive autonomous mobile robot systems in dynamic, hostile environments. We are integrating the following learning modules (both deliberative and reactive) into our existing MissionLab software:
  • Probabilistic situational recognition and indexing into behavior sets for opportunistic planning and reaction. The use of case-based reasoning (CBR) methods for situation-dependent behavioral gain and assemblage switching at the reactive level of execution. The use of CBR for reasoning in Finite State Automata (FSA) plan generation through the use of "wizards" to guide high level deliberative planning.

Archive of Papers and Presentations Related to Martian Meteorite ALH 84001 A team of scientists recently announced that they believe they have found evidence for ancient microbacterial life in a chunk of meteorite that came from the planet Mars. The startling news would be the first discovery of any form of life off the Earth. It could revolutionize our thoughts on the probability of life arising elsewhere in our solar system and the universe beyond, especially in the light of recent news about planetlike bodies detected around other stars. As with many groundbreaking discoveries, the initial evidence raises more questions than it answers. We have compiled this Web resource to answer some basic questions about Mars and its meteorites and to encourage further questions, discussions, and research on such a vital topic. It contains many links to other information on the Web and in print. Feedback to treiman@lpi.usra.edu

Life on Mars. Is that a possibility? Did it ever exist? A U.S. space probe is on its way to the red planet to try to start answering those and other questions about Mars. The Global Surveyor will map the entire Martian surface and is expected to produce a spectacular mosaic of the planet. The mission is the first step in a planned decade-long exploration of Mars, and comes four months after NASA revealed what some say is "the biggest discovery in the history of science" a Martian meteorite with supposed evidence of ancient microscopic life.

Global Surveyor prepares to enter Mars atmosphere
September 8, 1997
Web posted at: 11:13 p.m. EDT (0313 GMT) PASADENA, California (CNN) Scientists and engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, are hoping for a second successful mission to Mars this year as the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft closes in on the red planet. Program managers will be watching closely Tuesday morning when the spacecraft pressurizes its propulsion system in preparation for entering the Mars atmosphere later this week. In 1993 another spacecraft, the Mars Observer, was lost in space shortly after pressurization and three days before it was supposed to begin orbitting. Global Surveyor comes on the heels of the highly successful Mars Pathfinder program which sent back spectacular photographs of the surface of Mars. The spacecraft is scheduled Thursday to slip into orbit around Mars and begin its two-year mission: to draw detailed maps of the planet's surface and to seek out the most likely spots where life could have developed. NASA expects Surveyor to "return more data than all the planetary missions to Mars in the past have ever returned," said Glenn Cunningham, the manager of the Global Surveyor project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
