[ close ] Pacific Service Region Republic of the Marshall Islands The Republic of the Marshall Islands Culture The Marshallese culture is matrilineal. Women have always had great influence and power. The traditional roles of women are still recognized and respected even if their function no longer exists or has been changed over time. Politeness is a part of the Marshallese custom. Children are taught at a young age to respect their elders. The deep sense of respect for elders has made it common practice not to talk back, especially when being scolded for doing wrong. The children learn at a very early age to keep quiet when an older person is talking. Language English and Marshallese are the official languages, but for the most part, English is the language of the elite and the educated. English is the language of instruction at the secondary level while Marshallese is dominant in the elementary grades. The two chains of islands in the Marshalls, the Ratak and the Ralik, both have variations in terminology and pronunciation. However, the people of all the atolls understand the general language. Education The Republic of the Marshall Islands has 70 public elementary schools, 18 private elementary schools, 2 public high schools, and 5 private high schools. Elementary school curriculum is designed to prepare students to function in the Marshall Islands and for entrance into the Marshall Islands Secondary Program. Secondary education prepares pupils to function in the Marshall Islands, and with this greater scope of education, as citizens of the world community.

Marshallese society was and for the most part, still is, stratified into three general classes: Iroij (chiefs), Alap (clan heads), and Rijerbal (workers). The Iroij have ultimate control of such things as land tenure, resource use and distribution, and dispute settlement. The Alap's duties include maintenance of lands and supervision of daily activities. The Rijerbal are responsible for the daily work involved in subsistence, construction, agriculture, etc. In addition, land is divided into twelve categories, ranging from Imon bwij, land belonging to the whole lineage, to Kitdre, land given by a husband to his wife as a gift. Inheritance is matrilineal (passed through the mother). Unique Cultural Skills and Technologies Over the last 2000 or so years, Marshallese have developed, refined and perfected a number of unique skills and technologies, all of which illustrared their keen adaptation to the atoll and oceanic environment. Fishing technology, for instance, developed into one with very high specialization. The wide range of fishing environments coupled with the great variation in fish species led to a diverse and highly specialized range of fishing techniques. Few other cultures in the world have developed as many fishing techniques and styles as the Marshallese.
