Travel By Fingertip.....Martinique P oints of I nterest In M atinique Martinique abounds with lush vegetation, exotic flowers, historic artifacts, old plantations and numerous beaches. Some of the white sand beaches are man made and the beaches on the northern part of the island have been created from grey, volcanic ash. Touring Martinique is made simple with many pre-destined tours available for half day or full day excursions. Traveling the island by car is also suggested. The pre-Lent Mardi Gras Carnival is a thrilling spectacle. Fort-de-France This coastal city, the capital of Martinique, has often been compared to New Orleans in that both possess European charm and tropical flavors. La Savane is the city's luscious, 12 acre park. Check the tourist office for events, maps, etc. Aquarium de Martinique Sea creatures representing 250 different species, including sharks. Martinique T he tiny island of Martinique, the most southerly of the Leeward Islands, is the Paris of the tropics. The island radiates a French culture, style and elegance. The comforts and sophistication of the towns, exotic cuisine, shops selling latest goods from France, art galleries, theatres and museums… all exude the delicate French appeal. The omnipresent French flavour is pleasantly blended with the West Indian warmth reflected the Caribbean cuisine and lively, endearing music, and the tropical landscape. The pristine beaches with white sand on the south coast and black in the north; secluded coves and reefs for swimming and snorkelling, luxuriant forests, rugged peaks and gorges, and the flowers and fruit like bougainvillaea, orchids, lilies, bananas, pineapples, papaya and coconut palms add the tropical colour and verve to the island. The island’s large harbour and its many marinas have made Martinique a major sailing centre in the southern Caribbean...

Ananova: Accor using work culture excuse to leave Guadalupe, Martinique - union Guadeloupe union official Raymond Gauthierot described Accor's claim to be withdrawing from Guadeloupe and Martinique because of the area's weak work culture as an excuse. He said: "They have enjoyed plenty of benefits thanks to favourable tax rules and lower social charges. Now that's over they are looking for an excuse (to leave)." "Company's are favouring other countries in the French Caribbean where labour costs a few dollars less," he said, in an interview in Liberation. On Monday Accor confirmed a press report which said it is closing operations in Guadeloupe and Martinique due to what it sees as a poor work culture. There is however no precise closure plan or timetable, although all investment has been frozen, the board member in charge of finance, Benjamin Cohen told Agence France-Presse. He said Accor's presence in the regions include around 15 sites employing 1,500 people. A letter by co-chairman Gerard Pelisson obtained by Le Parisien and published Saturday said the destinations in question are "impossible" to run profitably, whatever state aid is available, principally due to the work culture.
