First State-wide Summit on the Role of Arts in Education to Be Held at Johns Hopkins University
Policy makers, school officials to explore how arts improve education outcomes A recent study by the Business Committee for the Arts found that students who had been studying the arts scored 30 percent higher on academic skills tests than those who did not have arts in their curriculum. What's the story: The Johns Hopkins University and the of Maryland State Department of Education will host the first-ever summit at which educators, all the superintendents of a state's school system (in this case, Maryland) and policy makers will sit together to share knowledge and experience about how the study of music, dance, theater and the visual arts in school significantly improves students' ability to learn and their level of learning. Logistics: The Johns Hopkins University Policy Summit.

Charge to the Task Force
In September 1993, the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools established the Maryland Task Force on Gifted and Talented Education. The charge to the task force was "to study the current status of gifted and talented education across the State of Maryland and make appropriate recommendations..." Co-chaired by Carol Mills, Director of Research at the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) of The Johns Hopkins University, and Russell Beaton, Curriculum Specialist for Gifted and Talented Education/Communications Specialist for Frederick County Schools, the task force was composed of representatives from local boards of education, parent groups, local school systems, students, research and higher education, as well as State Department of Education staff. The study and preparation of the report of the task force took place over a 14-month period. During that time, the task force developed a mission statement and a set of principles for improving gifted and talented education that are reflected in the recommendations of the group. Task force members studied monographs from the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented; published research articles on "best practices"; a variety of MSDE documents; and reports from several recent state-wide studies. The 1983 report of the Task Force on Gifted and Talented Education was carefully reviewed by the group. With the timely publication of the document "National Excellence: A Case for Developing America's Talent" by the U.S. Department of Education, the task force was able to align its recommendations with those made in the national report.

Moving Heaven and Earth to Help Story by Christine Basham

Caring for a family member with mental retardation or developmental disabilities can be overwhelming. Fortunately for Southern Maryland’s families, someone is here to help. Whether you are just sorting through a diagnosis from your newborn’s pediatrician, or are trying to find the least restrictive work and home environment for an adult, the Arc of Southern Maryland is a wide network of resources for your family. Formerly known as the Association for Retarded Citizens, The Arc is a national not-for-profit organization. Since 1975, The Arc has worked with Southern Maryland parents to advocate on the behalf of children with disabilities. According to Executive Director Harriet Yaffe, the whole point of The Arc “is to keep families together.” “We support 84 people in group homes but we have been hesitant to expand the program,” says Yaffe. Families with children who have been mainstreamed through the school years usually want to avoid segregating their adult children into a home exclusively for developmentally disabled people. As a practical matter, personality conflicts can also make group home housemates hard to match well.
