MIT - First Place in Undergrad Computer Engineering
Probably not a big surprise - in U.S. New and World Reports latest annual rankings, MIT was first for undergraduate computer engineering programs. Next was Carnegie Mellen, Stanfor, then UC - Berkeley. Other rankings of note - Pomona College hangs around at #5 - tied with Carleton College? Really now, would you rather freeze in Minnesota or hang out in the sun of Southern California? And, Wellesley at number 4 is nice - I have lots of friends who went to Wellesley - but, hey they still don't accept men! ... "Networked World: Information Technology and Globalization." As Information Technology becomes more pervasive, what is happening to the gap between the have's and have-not's. James Koch, executive director, Center for Science, Technology, and Society at SCU: The information age did not evaporate with the bursting of the bubble. It's only begun to transform the social fabric of cities and regions around the world, and now is a perfect time to survey the landscape of our networked world.

Classes are small. With only 20-25 students, teachers are able to provide individual attention and establish a rapport with each student. Small classes allow teachers to use a team approach to learning, which fosters adaptability, creativity and cooperation. Small classes also give students ample hands-on opportunities to work with the technologies available to them. Somerset County Public Schools are committed to developing the full potential of graduates, so they will succeed in our global society. Technology and Curriculum There are computer labs in all schools, and most have Internet access. The high schools have high-technology labs that emphasize classwork in avionics, electronics, computer applications, and computer networking. The applied technology high school also has a Computer-Aided Design Lab.

UMBI.news, Vol. 1, No. 1
May 6, 1998 Welcome to UMBI.news an informal electronic newsletter for UMBI faculty, staff, and friends. Published by the Office of Institutional Advancement, UMBI.news is designed to help bridge the communication gap that can result from the creation of an active and thriving institution whose distinct and highly successful component centers are diverse in location, focus, and size. We envision UMBI.news as j ust one part of an expanded internal and external communications program that will, in the months ahead, help us learn and understand more about each other. This online communique will also provide a platform for highlighting UMBI's significant contribut ions to research, economic development, and education in the state of Maryland and beyond. Because we know how busy UMBI people are, we'll attempt, in this once-a-month format, to present a concise compendium of accomplishments and activities within all parts of UMBI. If there is fast-breaking news, we will issue special bulletins to supple ment this monthly schedule. We welcome and encourage news items from you. We'll also try, whenever time and space allow, to keep you informed of business and federal/state government information you may find useful. Comments, suggestions, and news for UMBI.news should be sent to:

Liaisons Professional Development Technology Integration ... Home GRANTS - TECHNOLOGY IN MARYLAND SCHOOLS GRANT Administered by the Maryland State, the Technology in Maryland Schools (TIMS) grants provide schools with funding for networking, hardware, software and staff development. Funding is divided into two categories. Network cabling and other building improvements are funded in proportion to the physical size of the school. Each particpating school, regardless of size, receives approximately $42,000 for hardware, $1,000 for software and $7,000 for staff development.
Most schools apply for funding from both categories of the grant, but schools that have already been networked can apply for the hardware, software and staff development funding. To be eligible to participate, schools must submit detailed plans describing the project plan and the expected curricular outcomes to the Maryland State Department of Education.
Nearly all of the Baltimore County Public Schools have participated in the program, which ends after the 2001-2002 school year.

HEINRICHS Q: Your work with "tactile" learning programs sounds intriguing. Can you describe some of these? DEV: Ted [Edward D.] Harris [a rheumatologist, former medical staff president and former medicine chair] is interested in developing a tactile program that would allow physicians or students to "feel" various stages of damage and pathologies. The stiffness on a hand-held mouse device would change depending on the extent of the arthritis programmed into the system. This would be a wonderful tool to help practicing physicians understand the arthritic process. Ted Harris can feel a wrist and know exactly what is going on. A less-experienced physician could benefit from learning what Dr. Harris feels. HEINRICHS: Q: What else?
