The University of Maryland has a history of cooperation with industry in the support of research that is consonant with the University's missions of teaching, research, and public service. Cooperative efforts are encouraged because they produce mutual benefits as well as benefits to society. Industry support contributes to the education of scientists, engineers, and others and also to the development of technologies that can be put to practical use by society. Facilitating the transfer of technology is an important goal of the cooperative industry-university relationship. Our industrial sponsored research projects maintain a balance between industry's search for useful knowledge to be applied toward the development of products, processes and services and the University's pursuit of research as an integral part of the educational process. A valuable benefit of industry-university cooperation is to provide additional research and thesis opportunities for students.

Logger educational programs have been established in many states, with most being voluntary. Curriculum and teaching methods vary by state. However, the overall purpose of many of these programs is to provide loggers with the "critical thinking skills" needed to improve their harvesting practices, work safety, economic viability and protect the environment. In addition, they address public concerns and fears about timber harvesting, that could preclude unwarranted regulations and local logging ordinances. This training for loggers have facilitated many behavioral changes and recommended BMP's(Best Management Practices) are in place.
RELEVANCE
Logging is a significant business in the U.S. It is estimated there are 25,000 logging firms nationwide with 150,000 harvesting professionals. Logging is the first stage for an industry that makes up 7% of the Nation's manufacturing economy. It is estimated there are 483 million acres of commercial forests nationwide with approximately 5 million acres harvested annually.

SURVEY DETAILS Buoyed by high student marks and improved recruiter grades, Maryland's Smith School of Business was one of four newcomers to make it into BW's Top 25 in 1998. Grads were impressed with the school's close-knit, diverse environment. Thirty-nine percent of Smith's full-time student body were internationals (tied for most in the Top 25 with Carnegie Mellon), and 36% were women, good for third-highest in the elite grouping. Meanwhile, Maryland's classes were small and intimate: An average of 46 students were enrolled in a core class, while elective courses had just 25 students on average. Adding to the cooperative culture was a flexible faculty easily accessible outside the classroom. STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS Maryland has become a fairly selective school of late. Applications for the class of 2000 reached an all-time high of 1,941, more than double what the school drew just eight years earlier; only 21 percent of those who applied got in. So you'll need strong GMAT scores and a decent GPA to get in the gate. You'll have an edge if you apply early, by the February deadline at the latest; applications are considered in rounds, and you can expect a reply about eight weeks after each of the first three deadlines, four weeks after the final deadline in April. International candidates should note that they have a different set of dates to consider: Applications from overseas are considered in the November and December rounds, with a final deadline of February. Personal interviews are not required less than half of those admitted for the class of 2000 had a face-to-face sit-down.
