Standards for Excellence in the Nonprofit Sector
The Maryland Nonprofits Standards for Excellence Program is designed to promote excellence and integrity in nonprofit organizations. The program is based on a code of conduct called The Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector. The Standards for Excellence program provides a wide array of services to help nonprofit organization implement the Standards in an effort to improve their work. As part of the Standards certification program, organizations voluntarily submit to a rigorous review of all aspects of their program operations. Organizations that have earned the Seal of Excellence have passed this review and found to be exemplary. "In today's world, nonprofits cannot simply be 'do-gooders.' Nonprofits must act ethically and be held accountable for achieving results. The Standards for Excellence give nonprofit board and staff leaders the tools they need to strengthen the quality and integrity of management in their organizations."
Walter Sondheim

March 27, 2003
Bethesda Chapter CIO Breakfast Series
Location:
Pooks Hill Marriott Hotel, Bethesda, Maryland
Registration Opens : 6:30 a.m. - Breakfast Begins Promptly at 7:30 a.m. Topic: e-Records Management While agencies are deploying new systems to electronically sign and send documents and other data, there are no guidelines as to how much of that information should be saved and no classifications for the type of data that constitutes a record. New government mandates from the White House are compelling agencies to address the issue of information archives because they do not have the resources to save paper-based data permanently. The electronic storage of documents would be cost-effective, but without clear policies, technical standards and resources, most agencies are struggling with a move to "paperless" because they fear the data cannot always be accessed reliably. As the cost of storing data has decreased, organizations are tempted to retain everything, which makes the management of records that much more difficult.

T he Biological Resources Engineering Department at the University of Maryland examines the relationships between mankind, other living things, and the environment. Our students and faculty are involved in a wide range of activities ranging from biomedical engineering to urban wildlife management to water resources engineering. About 200 students are pursuing B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degrees in the Department. Undergraduate students within the Department can choose from a variety of focus areas including Biomedical Engineering, Bioenvironmental and Ecosystem Engineering, Biotechnological Engineering, Premedicine, Pre-Veterinary, Plant and Wildlife Resources Management, Land and Water Resources Management, and Environmental Education and Park Management. Graduate students can choose from focus areas in Bioengineering, Ecological Engineering, and Bioenvironmental and Water Resources Engineering. Alert: The ENBE 485 Capstone I class will be offered only in the fall semester starting the Fall of 2003. Currently ENBE 485 is offered every semester. It will not be offered in the spring term starting Spring 2004. This will require planning by students and advisors since students graduating at the end of the fall semester will have to take ENBE 485 and 486 sooner in their programs than currently. This change is a result of very low enrollment in the spring semester for ENBE 485.

    http://web.aces.uiuc.edu/lvd/famres.htm
Family Leadership and Resource Management Overview This program area is marked by a wide variety of leadership, volunteer, and train-the-trainer programs. Eleven states report eighteen programs of excellence in family leadership and family resource management. The programs are grouped according to specialized competencies and bodies of expertise ranging from family and community leadership, family empowerment, nutrition education, and family resource management.. Family Leadership. The Extension Service, with significant support from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, developed a number of sustainable and influential Family Community Leadership (FCL) Programs throughout the nation which addressed the needs of family units, members of communities, and the larger society. Traditional FCL programs provide participants with personal empowerment, motivation of volunteers, group management tools, leadership skills, increased understanding of public policy formation. Train-the-Trainer. FCL has a specific curriculum and delivery method. The curriculum is taught at state universities by extension professionals. FCL graduates, in turn, teach others at the community level what they have learned. FCL refined the classic train-the-trainer model to disseminate university-based knowledge. The educational philosophy of FCL is learning by doing. Program trainees are expected to become program trainers for one year. Participants are expected to become involved in public policy as a result of their increased skills and confidence.

Identification of financing options is an essential element of environmental quality management programs. EPA has a long tradition of providing grants to municipalities for expanding and upgrading centralized publicly-owned wastewater treatment facilities. With passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments (SDWA) of 1996, EPA assumed a role in the financing of drinking water facilities. The Clean Water Act (CWA) Amendments of 1987 provided additional flexibility for the funding of other water quality projects related to abatement of nonpoint source pollution and implementation of estuary plans. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Construction Grants Program was a major source of Federal funds, providing more than $60 billion for the construction of publicly-owned wastewater treatment projects. These projects, which constituted a significant contribution to the nation's water infrastructure, included sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, and collection and interceptor sewers; rehabilitation of sewer systems; and control of combined sewer overflows. The Construction Grants Program led to the improvement of water quality in thousands of municipalities nationwide.
