Maryland. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Maryland, the "Free State" "Old Line State"
Abbreviation:
MD It's believed that Lord Baltimore, who received a charter for the land in 1632, named the state after Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I. One of the original 13 states to join the Union (in 1788), Maryland is in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard. The Mason and Dixon line - marking the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland - was drawn in the 1760s to settle a dispute between the Penn and Calvert families. In addition it is the traditional boundary between the North and the South. Chesapeake Bay, which cuts deep into Maryland, provides the state with several excellent harbors including Baltimore and Annapolis, the home of the United States Naval Academy. The long Chesapeake Bay shoreline offers opportunities for boating, fishing and swimming. Old mansions and historic sites throughout the state appeal to visitors. One of Maryland's most famous annual events is the Preakness Stakes, a horse race run each May at the Pimlico race track in Baltimore.

I have endeavored to understand the nature of cities, urban life, and the relationship between cities and the natural environment, primarily from an historical point of view. I am interested particularly in the processes responsible for changes in the urban landscape, and the consequences of those changes for human beings and the environment. Three themes tie together my research: the study of urban infrastructure, public health, and environmental justice. More... PUBLICATIONS Boone, Christopher G. Lecturer in Human Geography, Loughborough University, England. Lecturer in Human Geography, Liverpool John Moores University, England. Project Leader (Eurostat), Portsmouth Polytechnic, England. Research Assistant (ESRC), University of Bristol, England. Research Interests and current projects My research focuses on new theoretical directions in Human Geography, drawn from the sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. Over the past decade I have been attempting to construct a new way of doing Human Geography, which I have come to call Poststructuralist Geography. My main sources of inspiration have been recent developments in critical human geography-such as structural Marxism, actor-network theory, and post-positivist spatial science-, twentieth-century continental philosophy, and social and cultural theory. I have been especially inspired by the innovative spatial practices of writers such as Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, and Jean-François Lyotard. Their reconceptualization of spatiality, temporality, and the taking place of events has enabled me to develop a theoretical practice that permits new kinds of geography which I hope are interesting, important, and effective.

The identified lessons correlate to the MSPAP Social Studies Outcomes and the Social Studies Content Standards. The lessons referenced are fully described in the Social Studies Fourth Grade Curriculum Guide, PGIN 7690-1329. Fourth grade is the only grade level to provide a focus on the study of Maryland, its geography, history and people. A further reduction of the lessons represented here would seriously compromise the information the students need to perform satisfactorily on the fifth grade MSPAP. UNIT I: GEOGRAPHY AND REGIONS This unit focuses on basic geography skills to enhance student proficiency in reading and interpreting information presented on maps. The concept of region which is a main component of the fourth grade program is emphasized.
