Social Studies/Geography/History Education

The Social Studies/Geography and History Education unit provides specialized graduate programs for individuals interested in teaching or the preparation of teachers in history, geography or social studies education. The graduate programs are tailored to meet the needs of individual students and may include preparation for both school and non-school settings. Graduate programs focus on translating theory into practice for the social studies educator and contain a strong research component. Inquiry and research methodologies as they relate to the social sciences and social studies education are examined. Faculty are involved in a range of research and writing activities as well as providing service to the profession. Programs include the M.Ed., Ph.D., and Ed.D. degrees as well as the Advanced Graduate Specialist Certificate. Faculty members include Joseph Cirrincione, Ph.D. (Ohio State University), Sheryl Cozart, Ph.D, (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Bruce VanSledright, Ph.D. (Michigan State University) and Thomas Weible, Ph.D. (Iowa)

John Townshend, Professor, Department of Geography, University of Maryland atellites with cameras trained on the Earth's surface capture a continuous stream of data for Earth systems scientists. The process of collecting data by satellites, called remote sensing, generates data that researchers can use to monitor changes in the Earth's vegetation, such as loss of tropical rain forests or the spread of deserts. However, current computing technology cannot easily handle all the data that has been archived since the early 1980s. NPACI scientists are taking the first steps to piece together the tools for storing, managing, and analyzing repositories of remote-sensing data to paint a complete picture of the changing planet. Geographers and computer scientists at the University of Maryland are leading a project to build just such a remote-sensing data toolfor the Web. Behind the Web page interface, the prototype tool, called KRONOS, will access satellite-collected data sets and analyze land cover information from the images on high-performance computers before presenting them to the Web browser.

Orientation to Maryland Maryland lies at the heart of cultural, educational and recreational activities on the Atlantic seaboard. The term "variety" captures the essence of our special state, from Maryland's geography to its economy to its distinct communities. It is also on the leading edge of economic and technological innovation. For example, the recent announcement of the successful completion of the human genome sequencing effort came jointly from two Maryland-based organizations. And Maryland is now home to some of the leading companies in the emerging photonics sector so critical to information technology and related applications.
