The Geography/Library Science (GeLS) curriculum of the University of Maryland is a full offering in computer based spatial analysis and information management one of the few such programs in the United States. GeLS is a joint venture of the College of Information Studies (CLIS) and the Department of Geography. Students earn a Master of Library Science (MLS) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Geography on completion of a minimum of 54 graduate hours. For a full time student, this course of study requires two academic years plus one summer term. CLIS Faculty and Facilities The College of Information Studies employs 13 full-time faculty members and is especially strong in the areas of archives and records management, data processing, and information storage and retrieval systems. The Paul Wasserman Library in the College has extensive holdings in these areas. The Information Resource Center includes a large microcomputer laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment and technical support. The College's Instructional Development and Support Center (IDSC) provides audio and videotaping facilities, graphics and photographic laboratories and conservation equipment. GIS Day 2002 held May 21, 2002 at Accident Elementary School Accident, Maryland, USA We had a great time last year. The kids were like sponges, absorbing all I had to say with avid interest. In fact, when I have run into the children since then, they've asked if I would come back to their classes this year. We studied the adventures of GISA at the Snake River. After the PowerPoint presentation, I handed out blank maps for them to enhance with titles, legends, and north arrows. The teacher judged the entries, and the top three maps received a T-shirt. They learned about such terms as GIS, elevation contours, symbols, legends, north arrows, titles, etc. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely. This year I have plans to attend at least two classes. My oldest is now in 2nd grade and all three 2nd grade teachers have expressed an interest in a mapping lesson. Students busy at work making their maps.
