Options for Students Who are not matched to a Dietetic Internship
  • Contact the program director of internships with openings still available after the match date. This must be done as soon as possible after the names are released.
Contact the program director of one or two of the programs to which you applied. Ask what would make your application stronger if you were to apply again. Many times the program director can give very constructive feedback.
Look for programs that start in January. Some programs have two starting dates, one in the summer/fall and one in January.
Apply again, to the same places and/or to different places. If applying to the same places, be sure to take any constructive feedback into consideration.
Apply to graduate school, either in nutrition/food science or in another field. Some students have gone to medical school, graduate school for an MBA or a master's degree in areas such as public health, education, physiology. Some have done an internship after completing graduate degree.
Check into colleges/universities which offer a coordinated program in dietetics (CUP), where the supervised practical experience is done along with the course work. Some programs will allow students with a B.S. degree in dietetics to just do the practical experience; some allow students to do both the course work and the practical experience.

Welcome!
The Maryland WIC Program is a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children under 5. About WIC WIC is a federally funded program that provides healthy supplemental foods and nutrition counseling for pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children under age five. The program has an extraordinary 25 year record of preventing children's health problems and improving their long-term health, growth and development. WIC scored second highest in customer satisfaction among 30 high impact government programs in a recent survey. WIC serves over 7.3 million women, infants and children through over 10,000 clinics nationwide. In 1999, Maryland WIC served over 100,000 women, infants and children. Effects of WIC Participation on Pregnant Women Numerous studies have shown that pregnant women who participate in WIC have longer pregnancies leading to fewer premature births; have fewer low birth-weight babies; experience fewer fetal and infant deaths; seek prenatal care earlier in pregnancy and consume more of such key nutrients as iron, protein, calcium and vitamin C.

AN UPCOMING CONFERENCE IN BALTIMORE WILL ADDRESS SCHOOL HEALTH IN AN EFFORT TO PROTECT YOUNG PEOPLE NATIONWIDE
A child must learn reading, writing and arithmetic in order to succeed in school. But that's not all it takes for students to do well. Problems like violence, substance abuse, depression and even poor nutrition can prevent a young person from thriving in the classroom, and ultimately in life. In an effort to prevent these problems and improve the overall health of school children, the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Center for School Mental Health (CSMHA), along with the Center for Maternal and Child Health and the Maryland State Department of Education, will sponsor the first annual School Health Institute Program (SHIP). The Maryland State School Health Council is a co-sponsor. From July 23 - 27, hundreds of physicians, school nurses, psychologists, social workers, nutritionists, counselors, health educators, health practitioners, school educators and members of schools teams from across the U.S. will meet at the Holiday Inn Select – Baltimore North - for this unique conference. There will be intensive training on all eight components of coordinated school health programs, which are school health services, health education, nutrition, physical education, family and community involvement, staff wellness, school environment and mental health.

"This is a website/program for anyone interested in improving their health and fitness level. It's a "one stop" site for complete and integrated exercise and nutrition. Many health and fitness programs are too impersonal. They base their recommendations on one desired goal or experience level. Many are also too narrow, focusing on only one or two aspects of health and fitness. GHF will teach you how to implement all five components of optimal healthin combinations that are right for you. Whether you are a beginner needing guidance to help you get started, or a fitness buff looking for ways to add variety or increase intensity, they'll show you step by step the safest, most effective ways to reach your health and fitness goals. Everything you need to know to individualize and personalize your exercise is provided for you - it's now up to you to put it into practice. GHF provides the latest in up-to-date information and leading edge programsyou couldn't ask for more.
