Maryland Heart and Stroke Facts Facts and Figures 2000 The Organization
The American Heart Association was founded 75 years ago, in 1924, by six physicians, including revered Boston cardiologist Paul Dudley White, to share research findings and promote further study in the field of cardiology. Today, with 4.2 million volunteers nationwide, the American Heart Association is one of the world's premier non-profit health organizations, funded mainly by public contributions. The Mid-Atlantic Affiliate is one of 15 affiliates in the United States and Puerto Rico. The Mid-Atlantic Affiliate is made up of five councils, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and the National Capital Area Council. Locally, the Maryland Council raises more than 7 million annually to support lifesaving research, education and community programs. Every 33 Seconds, Someone Dies From Cardiovascular Disease
Nationally, heart diseases and stroke kill more than 950,000 Americans annually, almost as many people as all other causes of death combined. In Maryland more than one in four residents suffers from some form of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases caused nearly 31% of all deaths in our state in 1997, which is below the national average of 42.5%. Research Is The Starting Point
Research is our No. 1 priority. Research findings taken from the laboratory to the patient have resulted in dramatic progress over the last few decades, ultimately reducing the emotional toll of heart disease, as well as the economic cost, estimated in 1997 at $259.1 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity.

Tracks in health enhancement, exercise science, and physical education are designed for students interested in adult fitness, personal training, worksite wellness, cardiac rehabilitation, health promotion, community health, teaching health or physical education on the elementary or secondary level, athletic coaching, athletic training, and sports medicine. Career possibilities in physical education and health have expanded beyond the traditional school setting during the past decade. Americans have grown more interested in personal health, fitness, wellness, and leisure-time physical activities. This has created a demand for professionals with specialized training to provide leadership and service in adult fitness, health promotion, and sports medicine. In response to these changing societal interests and the resulting job market, the Department of Health Enhancement, Exercise Science, and Physical Education offers five tracks from which students may choose to fulfill their career goals: athletic training/sports medicine, exercise science/health fitness leadership, gerontology, health education, and physical education teacher preparation/coaching.
