Master Teacher Certification recognizes teachers of distinction. Only those teachers demonstrating a standard of advanced proficiency in their subject areas with documented evidence of student academic progress can earn the Master Teacher credential. American Board certified teachers will participate in a value-added assessment of student learning gains. This longitudinal study will assess teacher retention rates and measure a Master Teacher's continuing impact on student learning gains. (This is also true for Passport candidates) Candidates seeking Master Teacher Certification can expect:
  • Advanced testing that will demonstrate high levels of subject matter proficiency Requests for objective data documenting their student progress Active participation in the value-added assessment study to be required by the American Board Proper recognition and respect for their skill level and professionalism from states accepting American Board Certification
Schools, districts and states will benefit from the expertise of American Board Master Teachers. When available, Master Teachers will assist with American Board professional development for Passport Certified teachers.

Secondary Mathematics Education
As of Fall 2001, all students seeking certification for Secondary Mathematics Teaching must be enrolled as a Mathematics Major and would usually be expected to complete the Second Education Mathematics Major Track (although they could as well complete one of the other Mathematics Major Tracks). The student must also be enrolled in the secondary Mathematics Education program of the Curriculum and Instruction Major.
Introduction
The demand for qualified teachers of mathematics in middle schools and high schools is very high. By studying to obtain a mathematics teaching certificate at the University of Maryland, you can make yourself highly employable, and be prepared to make an important contribution to many people. At the same time, concerns continue to be raised at the highest levels of government about the qualifications of the people who are teaching mathematics. For instance, in the 1999 State of the Union address , the President said: ... many teachers lack even a minor in their main teaching field. Additionally, students in schools with the highest concentrations of poverty those who often need the most help from the best teachers are most likely to be in classrooms with teachers who are not fully qualified. [I propose to:]
  • require states to adopt competency tests for new teachers, demonstrating subject matter knowledge and teaching expertise;

    1998 National Accreditation Statute,
    House Bill 733
    ABSTRACT House Bill 733, signed by the Governor on May 21, 1998 and effective July 1, 1998, requires that all institutions offering a program to educate candidates for teacher certification must be nationally accredited by a national agency approved by both the US Department of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) by July 1, 2004. The statute designates the MSDE as the authority to implement the law, and it requires the MSDE to provide technical assistance and financial support for expenses incurred to institutions seeking accreditation. The statute further states that the Governor shall provide sufficient funds in the Department's annual budget to cover such costs. All colleges and universities offering programs leading to teacher certification must either file the intent to seek accreditation, certify their accreditation status, or in defined cases, receive a special waiver from the superintendent by July 1, 2000. The Missouri Council on Economic Education (MCEE) was invited to speak at the signing of economic education legislation by Missouri Governor Bob Holden. The Governor is a member of the MCEE Advisory Council and a former Trustee. The MCEE authored the legislation which calls for a major study of economic and personal finance education in the state for K-12 students. Passed by the Missouri House 130 - 11 and by the Senate 30 - 0, the bill is the result of new collaboration between many groups promoting economic and/or financial education.
    Governor Holden Signs Economic Literacy Bill In January, the Missouri Coalition for Economic and Financial Literacy was formed with about twenty organizations participating in a meeting called by the Missouri Bankers Association. A legislative subcommittee led by the MCEE was charged with drafting legislation as requested by participating legislators. The result was a bill that asks for recommendations on changing school funding, amount of economics and personal finance included in the curriculum, teacher training, teacher certification, testing, and to create an outline of a course required for high school graduation. To date, the MCEE has raised $65,500 of the $100,000 required for the study.
    Operation Outreach Makes Use of Talented Teachers The Economic Advocate program of the University of Missouri-Kansas City center's Operation Outreach has been functioning at high speed. One of the most rewarding and yet time consuming projects has been a collaborative effort to help edit and support the development of a module written by Jennifer Ernat, Hamilton, MO, to help teachers assess student progress toward the economic content standards of Missouri's statewide assessment. The module is in the field testing stage now and will eventually be posted on the Operation Outreach website at

    Students enrolled in the Mount's Seminary, MBA and MEd programs may seek assistance through federal loans, while MEd students may also be eligible to receive Maryland State Teacher Scholarships. To qualify for financial aid, students must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis, i.e., at least three (3) credits per semester for the MBA and Med programs and at least six (6) credits for Seminary studies. Registering for Classes
    Students interested in receiving financial aid need to plan accordingly. Because enrollment status is critical to this process, students should map their coursework on at least a semester basis. For those in the Accelerated MBA Program, this means pre-registering for all courses they intend to take in the semester's modules. Stafford Loans
  • Request Financial Aid Transcripts. Contact the Financial Aid Office(s) at each previously attended college/university and request these forms to be sent to the MSM Financial Aid Office, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. This step is required regardless of whether aid was received at the prior institution(s) or not.
  • Complete Stafford Loan Application. First-time borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note and a Stafford Loan Certification Form, both of which are available by calling the Financial Aid Office at (301) 447-5207. (Students who have borrowed previously in the Federal loan program should contact their prior lender and request a loan application.) Completed applications should be sent to the MSM Financial Aid Office. Once the Master Promissory Note is on file in the Financial Aid Office, a student may request additional funds for any ensuing semester by submitting another Stafford Loan Certification Form.

    Our principal goal is to empower all participants in the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning to be in control of their own health and well-being, and to provide a supportive atmosphere in which clients may grow, learn, and be guided toward a fitter lifestyle. Our teachers are highly trained, enthusiastic people dedicated to health and wellness. We are strongly committed to the power and depth of the original Pilates Method Certification. The physical conditioning system developed by Joseph H. Pilates is a highly evolved and in depth program that should be taught by individuals who have studied the system intensely and seriously. Our fully certified teachers have fulfilled a minimum of 700 hours of active training in all apparatus and mat work, seminars, and apprentice teaching. We strive to share/inform consumers of the power of the original Pilates Method by offering apparatus and mat sessions with experienced professional teachers in a safe environment. Lesa McLaughlin , co-owner, received her certification from the Pilates studio in New York in 1995. For the past 20 years, she has taught dance, choreographed and performed as a solo artist as well as with her company throughout the US, Europe, Asia, South America and Mexico. Lesa has a BFA degree in Dance from George Mason University and is currently on the teaching faculty at Dance Place.
