The Teacher Education Program is characterized by a highly nurturing and personalized environment, intellectual rigor, and a performance milieu within a liberal arts context. Education is not a subject major. As the department is a member of the Social Sciences Division, the foundational sequence courses (Principles of Education and Educational Psychology) can fulfill distribution requirements in the social sciences. The department seeks: a) to provide the professional preparation for certification required by the State Department of Education in Maryland and the many states with whom Maryland has reciprocal certification agreements; b) to explore the social, psychological, philosophical, and historical foundations of education in our society; and c) to stimulate inquiry concerning the nature of our educational institutions. The department, recognizing that the world of schooling is a primary socializing agency for the American polity, has the further aim of inviting students to inquire into the nature of education and its relationship to their future lives as citizens, parents, or educators.

participate in an increasingly competitive world economy and job market, function as responsible citizens in a democratic society, and achieve personally satisfying and fulfilling lives. Higher Standards for Teacher Certification Under the new certification system, advanced professional certification renewal occurs at five-year intervals and requires: an individual professional development plan that specifies coursework (at least six semester hours) or approved equivalent workshops and other professional activities to be completed during the five year period; and satisfactory or better performance ratings in at least three of the five years. The Committee report envisions all learners using computers and telecommunications systems as tools of learning. Professional Development for Student Performance The Maryland School Performance Program has given a new focus to professional development directed at school improvement. The State Department of Education has provided School Improvement Leadership training for hundreds of teachers, administrators, and members of the school improvement teams required by the MSPP. The training, which has focused primarily on low-performing schools, helps team members set improvement goals, use data to identify school problems, and find school improvement strategies. The Department has enlisted the support of local school systems by setting up, and providing training for, local Technical Assistance Support Teams to monitor school improvement planning.

    TEACHER EDUCATION
    Programs: Certification in Elementary Education
Certification in Secondary Education Provides professional coursework and experience required for initial teacher certification in Maryland for individuals who have completed a baccalaureate degree. Many credits earned in this program may be applied to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction or Reading. Students must meet with an adviser to have their transcripts reviewed, determine coursework for certification in either elementary education (grades 1-8) or secondary education (grades 7-12), and plan additional courses if the M.Ed. is desired. Coursework in specific content areas and methods differs according to the area of certification. An internship consisting of field experience and student teaching concludes the certification coursework. Internships are completed in a professional development school and include performance-based portfolio assessment.
