In virtually every classroom, there are a few students who stand out. But there are other students seated nearby in the same class. They tend not to open up, and their reading skills may not be as advanced as those of their peers. Real-world associations do not spring to their lips. Quite often, the difference between these two kinds of students stems from one crucial educational element that is either present or lacking: parent involvement. No matter how young your child may be, there is never a better time to think of it than right now. Research has shown that the following are great places to start:
  • Read to your child and encourage a love of books. Help with homework and check it every night. Express expectations that are high, but not unrealistic. Volunteer at a school in your community. Ask a teacher what you can do to help. Take your child to events and places that complement the school curriculum. Be aware of what your school board is doing, and vote in local elections.
"Community colleges are the seed bed for the American dream."

Longitudinal Study of 50 New Massachusetts Teachers:
Expectations, Experiences, and Career Decisions The Project on the Next Generation of Teachers
Harvard Graduate School of Education
Susan Moore Johnson, Principal Investigator
In an effort to understand what it will take to recruit and support the large number of new teachers entering public schools, the Project on the Next Generation of Teachers began a longitudinal study in 1999 to explore new teachers’ expectations and experiences with teaching and their subsequent career decisions. The sample of fifty first-year and second-year Massachusetts teachers was purposefully selected to include a diverse group of individuals working in a range of settings. It includes men and women, teaching at elementary and secondary levels, in charter and conventional public schools, located in urban and suburban districts. These individuals have entered teaching from traditional and alternative pathways, some as recent college graduates, others as mid-career entrants. Respondents were first interviewed in depth in 1999. Follow-up interviews were conducted 18 months later, in 2001. The study employs both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data to address the following questions: What expectations do new teachers have about teaching and how do they conceive of a career in teaching?

Our culture's river of vision is carrying us toward catastrophe. Sticks planted in the mud may impede its flow very slightly, but we don't need to impede its flow, we need to divert it into an entirely new channel. If our culture's river of vision ever begins to carry us away from catastrophe and into a sustainable future, then programs will be superfluous. When the river's flowing where you want it to flow, you don't plant sticks to impede it. Beyond Civilization
