2002 Parents of Graduates Survey
Institutional Research Office
February 24, 2003 Since 1999, the Institutional Research Office has been surveying the parents of Macalester graduates to see what their sons or daughters are doing 3 years after graduation. Parents received a short letter asking specifically about advanced degrees pursued by their son or daughter, with a stamped return envelope. If there was no response from the parents, email was sent to the graduate. Response rates for these surveys in the last four years range from 53% to 59% Parents were surveyed instead of graduates because they move less often, so surveys were more likely to reach their destination. Hopefully parents were not as busy as the graduates, and would be more likely to respond. In addition, parents generally like to tell you what their sons or daughters are doing. The 2002 survey again shows over half of our graduates pursuing advanced degrees within 3 years of graduation. Other results are profiled in the tables below:
Graduates Pursuing Advanced Degrees within 3 Years
Class Year Surveyed Percentage
Degrees Pursued by 1999 Graduates
Degree Pursued Percentage* Master's Doctorate Law Medical * graduates may have pursued more than one degree Of those who pursued a master's degree, 29% had completed it within 3 years. Of those who enrolled in law programs, 17% had completed their degree.

State and Local Taxes Do Matter:
A Rejoinder to the Skeptics
This article appeared in the September 9, 2002 issue of State Tax Notes David G. Tuerck, Suffolk University
Jonathan Haughton, Suffolk University The following relates to the article in the December 2002 issue of State Tax Notes The second, Tax Changes in New York City: The New York Tax Analysis Modeling Program (NYC-STAMP) , was issued in September 2001 by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. Contrary to what FPI implies, neither the Manhattan Institute report nor the Haughwout study asserted that changes in tax policy had been the sole Both studies indicate that tax policy played an important, but not exclusive, role in determining changes in city employment. The Manhattan Institute's NYC-STAMP model indicated that tax cuts had generated 80,000 jobs, or about one-fourth of the city`s private sector employment growth since 1997. The Haughwout study suggested that 16 percent of the decline in New York City's share of national employment from 1970 through 1997 could be attributed to the rise in the city's income tax rate. The FPI authors identify a number of explanatory variables that, they argue, the Haughwout and Manhattan Institute studies should have included. We contend that the variables they identify are not patently better than those already those included in the studies and may not even be relevant to the time period of interest.

EPA AWARDS NEARLY $750,000 IN BROWNFIELDS FUNDS TO MASSACHUSETTS CITIES
Contact: Leo Kay, Press Office, (617)918-4154 For immediate release: May 13, 1997; Release # 97-5-5 BOSTON The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $724,780 to Massachusetts municipalities today as part of a renewed national commitment to revitalize abandoned "brownfield" sites whose redevelopment has thus far been thwarted by contamination. Today's grants announcements were accompanied by a White House call for increased brownfields opportunities for municipalities plagued by abandoned, polluted properties. Fifteen federal agencies have teamed with 10 other organizations to pledge $300 million in grants and contracts, and $165 million in loan guarantees. White House officials also renewed the administration's proposal to provide tax incentives to those interested in returning to productive use contaminated properties. The Massachusetts grants include $197,000 to Westfield, $175,000 to New Bedford, $125,000 to Greenfield, $200,000 to Lynn and $30,000 to Chicopee. As part of today's announcement, the EPA's New England office awarded more than $1.3 million in grants and services to New England municipalities for brownfields activities. Since the program's inception three years ago, New England towns and municipalities from Limestone Maine to Bridgeport, Conn. have now received 20 brownfields grants, valued at more than $3.5 million. New England has received more brownfields grants than any other region the country.

The Public Health Service will also set up Metropolitan Medical Strike Teams (MMST) in each of the original 120 cities designated in the Nunn-Lugar-Domenici Amendment, which receive partial funding from the Nunn-Lugar-Domenici Program. To date, 47 cities have Metropolitan Medical Strike Teams in place. Metro Medical Strike Teams respond on the request of local authorities in charge of the incident. The MMSTs' focus is mass medical treatment and mass decontamination ability. They also facilitate coordination between area medical facilities to assure efficient use of available resources. MMSTs are 129 person teams divided into three groups, each consisting of 43 people. The MMSTs have a diverse makeup, consisting of physicians, nurses, paramedics, EMTs, HAZMAT technicians, and law enforcement officers

The Arizona Repubic Article B. Purpose of the Case Studies
Each of the metropolitan case studies will meet 3 objectives. They are:
    1. What are the growth and development patterns in the metropolitan area? 2. How do major federal, state and local spending, tax, and regulatory policies affect the growth and development patterns in the region? 3. What are the practical policy reforms that can help federal and state policymakers (as well as private and public sector leaders at the metropolitan level) provide the framework for more efficient and equitable growth and development in the metropolitan area and other metropolitan areas in the state?

Note : The below information encompasses 30 years of Massachusetts 4-H history. For a more complete version, please see Sixty Years of 4-H , a 56K downloadable PDF document. 4-H Youth Development Program Urban programs, particularly aimed at children living in low-income communities, grew in the early 1970's. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) bill which earmarked $7.5 million for 4-H, followed by an additional $5 million designated to expand general 4-H programs in urban areas, made this happen. By the mid-1980's almost half of the five million 4-H members were from urban and suburban areas. Nationally, during the 1980's 4-H enrollment in school enrichment programming increased dramatically. In Massachusetts, Extension assumed the leadership for Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom, integrating 4-H curriculum with other agriculture education resources and holding teacher training workshops throughout the state. 4-H also experimented with school-based health education programs. By the end of the 1980's the 4-H Youth Development program had lost 55% of its staff through planned layoffs and retirements. This, combined with a reduction in clerical staff and the closing of county offices, had a negative effect on enrollment, programming, and staff morale.

DURHAM - You may have heard of cars that run on electricity, propane or natural gas, but how about hydrogen or vegetable oil? A 1980 Volkswagen Dasher adapted to run on recycled restaurant grease was just one of several innovative automobiles on display as the University of New Hampshire hosted a ceremony designating New Hampshire as a Clean Cities state for its commitment to promoting the use of alternative fuels in coming years. Medical studies show that carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels like oil and gasoline threaten the health of children, the elderly and others suffering from respiratory illnesses like asthma. In New Hampshire, most air pollution comes from motor vehicle emissions. The VW "Bio Car" came from Moultonboro Academy, where an honors biology class learned how to convert vegetable oil waste into "biodiesel" fuel. The 10 honors students will travel to Washington, D.C., this week to attend the Future Car Congress Student Challenge.
