For lifelong learning, you need a foundation of basic skills. A lot of people never really get those the first time around. Most adults work, so we need to go to where they are.
Before coming to study adult education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Connie Nelson worked as a lathe operator at General Electric (G.E.) in Lynn, Massachusetts. Working by day and studying for her undergraduate degree in adult training and development at the University of Massachusetts at Boston at night, she earned course credit by providing after-hours courses in basic math, measurement, blueprint reading, and lathe operation to her fellow G.E. employees. "Having used my shop floor experience in curriculum design and teaching, I wanted to see how it would all connect to educational research and policy," says Nelson. Teaching and Learning

The Art Education Department serves a variety of student populations; applicants range from those with no experience in education to people who have been teaching for 20 years and want a change of direction. We believe that the best art teachers have a life-long commitment to their own art making. They find inspiration for teaching in their own creative processes and inspiration for their studio work in their teaching experiences. As Chair Claudine Bing points out, “Teaching is very close to the art making process.” Art making carries with it a broad social responsibility, and the art teacher’s role often extends into the community. Our curriculum includes art education in schools, museums, community arts centers, and other educational contexts. As Faculty member Christy Park says, “Teaching is about opening doors through new experiences, ideas, pictures, and opportunities for reinforcement or revision.” Our graduates have flexibility: they can teach adults, can work in museums or in the community-a full range of settings. The program combines the scholarly discipline of an academic program with the intensive studio-based focus of an art college. Art Education courses divide into four areas: theoretical frameworks for teaching art; direct experience with materials and processes; field observation and participation; and student teaching. We emphasize understanding and creating bridges between different cultures and artistic heritages and require students to study the history or art history of at least one non-Western culture.

Purdue VP emeritus, state leader in higher education dies
    John W. Hicks
Hicks, who served Purdue for more than 40 years and had a major impact on Indiana higher education, died this morning (Friday, 12/20) at George Davis Manor in West Lafayette, following a long illness. He was 81. In addition to holding key administrative positions at Purdue, Hicks for many years was the university's liaison with the state of Indiana. He is credited with playing an important role in creating and developing the system of higher education that has now served generations of Hoosier students. Gov. Frank O'Bannon said, "Indiana owes John Hicks a debt of gratitude for the innumerable contributions he made to education in our state, including a half-century of dedication to Purdue University and a major role in creation of what is now Ivy Tech State College. His commitment to molding the minds of young people and to building institutions where that could occur was rare. I feel fortunate to have known him." Purdue President Martin C. Jischke said, "John Hicks had a major impact in helping to build Purdue as a great university and in developing Indiana's entire system of higher education. His achievements created opportunities and better lives for generations of Indiana students, who were always the focus of his work. He was a towering figure in higher education whose brilliance and personal style influenced not only our times, but the lives of all who knew him. He was as much loved as he was respected."

Review of Charter School Legislation Provisions Related to Students with Disabilities, September 1998
    General Legislative Provisions
This first part of the review examines statutory provisions that have implications for, but do not necessarily address directly, students with disabilities or special education. Various provisions in state statutes grant charter schools varying levels of authority to govern themselves and to make decisions regarding the operation of the schools, including decisions related to personnel, curriculum, and expenditures. The extent of a charter school's operational autonomy will have an impact on how special education programs are implemented in these schools. As described in the following paragraphs, statutory provisions that give higher levels of autonomy include ones that allow or require charter schools to (1) operate independent from local school districts, (2) make their own personnel decisions, (3) be exempt from state and district education laws and regulations, (4) assume liability for their actions, and (5) receive their funding directly from the state. Independence from districts.
