III. EQUITY in EDUCATION... It's The Law! Educational Initiatives, Laws, Policies, Regulations and Guidelines in Schools Equity in public schools is the law. Promoting and enforcing gender equity in the classrooms, guidance offices, in interactions between students, during cooperative learning, on the school bus and in the corridors, is the responsibility of all school staff. It is our job to create, utilize and to ensure that equitable learning environments, materials, practices, policies and procedures exist and are used in our schools. Although the focus of this publication is on the topic of equity regarding gender, it is important to note the relationship of gender to race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, religion, age, sexual orientation, abilities, marital/parental status and non English speakers. Students representing all of these categories should receive fair treatment in public education. The following laws, educational initiatives, policies, guidelines and regulations exist to both inform and guide all school staff, (including teachers, guidance staff, principals, superintendents, building maintenance workers, food service workers) regarding equity.

Thus, the nurses contend, and seek a declaratory judgment to the effect, that the certification requirements indicate that the nurses and the classroom teachers are similarly situated professional educators who must be similarly compensated. In the instant case, however, the nurses have failed to establish that there is an actual controversy. An actual controversy as contemplated under c. 231A requires: real dispute caused by the assertion of one party of a legal relation, status or right in which he has a definite interest , and the denial of such assertion by another party also having a definite interest in the subject matter, where the circumstances attending to the dispute plainly indicate that unless the matter is adjusted such antagonistic claims will almost immediately nondiscrimination and equal opportunity for members of minority groups and women . Facts In Action Home Page One Making it Count In Brief ... About the Early Education Clearinghouse Page One: Study Shows Workforce Investment Pays Off The first of several reports on the cost and quality of early care and education in Massachusetts indicates that, on average, the Commonwealth provides early care and education programs that are comparable to or of higher quality than those of other states, that lower-income families are less likely to have access to high-quality care, and that workforce issues – such as teacher education– have an important impact on the quality of care provided. The study, funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education and conducted by the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women and Abt Associates, looked only at center-based, full-day, year-round programs for preschool-aged children. Researchers drew a random sample of centers from across the state and measured quality using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R), a widely-used tool for measuring the quality of the classroom environment, activities, and teacher-child interactions. The study looked at ECERS-R scores in relation to factors that the state can most easily regulate, such as child-to-staff ratios, group size, and the educational levels of teaching staff.
