A Comprehensive Approach to Safe Schools/Healthy Students
NORTHAMPTON, MA: A new federal grant has been awarded to the Hampshire Educational Collaborative (HEC) totaling $2,919,699 over three years for implementation of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative in five area school districts.
Creating safe and healthy school environments and sound emotional well-being is essential to building a strong educational foundation that is conducive to learning. The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative funds will enable the Hampshire County school districts of Amherst-Pelham, Easthampton, Northampton, Gateway Regional, and Ware to improve coordination between community agencies and schools and meet gaps in services. This project grows out of a two year collaboration between schools and community organizations working through the Strategic Planning Initiative for Families and Youth of Hampshire County (SPIFFY). This organization, which now operates from a base at the Collaborative through a grant from the Community Foundation, developed out of concerns about inadequate services to reduce juvenile violence and other risk factors.
The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative encourages long range planning to target violence and at-risk behaviors, beginning in early childhood. Though research has shown that positive social and emotional development of young children aids in preventing future difficulties, there is a real lack of services for families with children under the age of five. To meet this need, the Collaborative will add to its early childhood staff in order to provide technical assistance and training for more early care providers and parents, and work with other agencies to provide home visiting services.

Goal 3a: Green academics by making environmental literacy a goal of general education and infusing the principles of sustainability into all curricula. Also, increase environmental literacy and citizenship among all stakeholders, including facilities staff.
Rationale: "Human impact on the environment is far more dependent on the actions of individuals who are not trained as environmental specialists than those who are. Therefore, environmental education must be a pillar of all higher education, rather than restricted to isolated individual disciplines." Anthony Cortese, Director of Second Nature.
Goal 3b: Increase understanding and respect for the environment, and strengthen learning in grades K-12 via training teachers and partnering with local K-12 schools in using the environment as an integrating context (EIC) for all K-12 subjects.
Rationale: A recent nationwide study documents that using EIC "…for instruction and learning, students [in K-12] demonstrate gains in problem-solving, critical thinking, retention and decision-making skills; as well as increased enthusiasm and engagement, and gains in standardized test scores. Discipline problems decrease." Closing the Achievement Gap; Using the Environment as an Integrating Context by Gerald A. Lieberman. It can reasonably be concluded that EIC will increase MCAS scores
