After two straight years of over $20 billion spent on school construction projects nationwide, the rest of 2002 and the next couple of years are shaping up strongly. According to magazine’s annual school construction survey, U.S. school districts spent $11.2 billion on new schools last year, $4.2 billion on additions, and $11.4 billion on modernizations for a total of $26.8 billion— a record level. The publication projects a total of $107.8 billion in K-12 school construction contracts from 2002-2004. Several trends are driving school construction projects: a growing population of school-age children in some areas, a backlog of repairs due to deferred maintenance, the need to upgrade buildings to accommodate new technology, new building requirements including the Americans

Our Salute to K-12 Schools of Washington
Several elementary and secondary schools in Washington have science pages that we believe will be of interest to viewers of the Senior Research Projects in the School of Oceanography. Some of these pages describe science projects that include river, coastal, or estuarine environments. Others are science pages that describe activities in the school. And others contain information on careers in science . We also want to recognize the schools in Project Athena

New Release
The Best of Both Worlds: Blending History and Geography in the K-12 Curriculum

Geography plays a crucial role in shaping history, and the study of history provides an important context for students learning geography, but K-12 teachers rarely take advantage of the complementary nature of these two subjects by teaching both in one integrated curriculum. This new report shows how the study of U.S. history can be enriched by blending geography into the curriculum. The centerpiece of the report is an innovative curriculum framework for studying the American past, a course in which each historical period is supplemented and enriched by the introduction of relevant geography. For a pdf of this report, click here . Hard copies can be ordered by calling 1-888-TBF-7474 (single copies are free). Just Announced
Prizes for Excellence in Education

The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation proudly announces its inaugural Prizes for Excellence in Education. These annual awards (each of which bears a grant of $25,000) recognize and honor distinguished scholars, practitioners, and policymakers who have advanced the cause of education reform in America.
