65. Peterson Architects - Profile
massachusetts firm presents brief portfolio of libraries, student centers, classroom buildings, athletic facilities, galleries, and offices. Include profiles and contacts.
http://peterson-architects.com/
At Peterson Architects, the range of our design extends from campus planning to the design of academic buildings to residential design and the detailing of furnishings and built-ins. At varying scales, these elements comprise much of our built environment.
The specifics of place always inform our designs. The location of a building or object will suggest ideas about its size and shape, its materials, and its relationship to the environment. We feel strongly, as well, that no stylistic mandate is required to achieve this end. Depending on the program and context of the building, we strive for a "humanistic" modern design featuring simplicity of detailing and a focus on space, light, structure, and material. While we aim to create compelling and dynamic spaces, we do so by combining clarity with quiet and thoughtful innovation; we strive for the delicate balance of order and invention. Much of our work occurs on school and university campuses. We believe that these institutions should have a "campus plan" that reflects the spirit of the institution. Campus buildings should support and help define the vision of that plan; they should create appropriate exterior places at the same time as they meet their functional goals. C. Bernard Shea Rowing Center, Princeton University (Jeff Peterson, Project Architect at ARC)

The Boston Public Library, established in 1848, was the first publicly supported municipal library in America, and the first public library to allow people to borrow books and materials, a truly revolutionary concept at the time. Today, the BPL has more than 6 million books; serves more than 2 million people in its 27 branch libraries around the city; and is one of only two public libraries in the country that are members of the Association of Research Libraries. The BPL and all of its events are free and open to the public. At the Boston Public Library, books are just the beginning!

The Boston Library Consortium is a cooperative association of sixteen academic and research libraries. Its purpose is to share human and information resources so that the collective strengths of the group advance the research and learning of the members' constituents. Founded in 1970, the Consortium supports resource sharing and enhancement of services to users through programs in cooperative collecting, access to electronic resources, access to physical collections, and enhanced interlibrary loan and document delivery. Access to research materials at member institutions is facilitated by:
* computerized Gateway information services with access to the Consortium's Union List of Serials, member's online catalogs, and other information resources;
* interlibrary loan utilizing daily delivery services and telefacsimile and Internet transmission;
* on-site use of most member libraries (information on individual libraries' access policies is available in the Consortium Handbook. Consult Reference staff at a Consortium library or contact the individual libraries for detailed information);
* borrowing privileges for qualified researchers (see information on Consortium Card program on back page).
