About the Foundation Annual Fund Athletic and Scholarship Programs ... Ways to Give Scholarships A principal function of the Foundation is the administration of a scholastic program through which the Foundation provides one year of post-high school education in certain high-quality schools and junior colleges to a limited number of strongly motivated and carefully selected young men and women who may need further academic preparation to assist them in qualifying for entrance into the Naval Academy. This program is supported and encouraged by the Superintendent of the Naval Academy and is approved by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Since 1944, the Foundation has assisted many fine candidates (over 2,500) with good leadership, scholastic, and athletic potential, who have evidenced a genuine interest in attending the Naval Academy, to prepare for service in the Navy or Marine Corps.

JROTC Promotes Violence
While schools work to stop violence in the wake of Columbine, many forget a source close to home. JROTC programs across the country are being rocked by scandals, ranging from military-style executions to hazing to classic military sexual assault and intimidation. JROTC's violence is promoted by the ethos and the purpose of the program itself. When war's horrors are glossed over and glorified, murder, hazing, and lesser brutality become easier to contemplate. When School Boards allow the military's JROTC program into schools despite the military's bigotry and discriminatory practices, their message condones hate-crimes.
Military training is designed to dehumanize soldiers so that they will kill on command, without questioning orders. The JROTC curriculum itself praises obedience without question. A military recruiting program which induces half of all its graduates to enter the military JROTC is the only program in our schools which can be expected to cause deaths and severe casualties among its graduates.

11/15/02Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank was among several speakers who addressed a sizeable crowd of students, faculty, administrators, and visitors at the November 1 "Rally Against Discrimination," held in the Law School’s East Wing courtyard. The rally was organized to highlight discontent with the school’s partial suspension of its policy not to accommodate discriminatory employers who wish to recruit on the law school campus.
The Law School was forced to suspend its nondiscrimination policy in response to a letter from the United States Air Force regarding a six-year old federal statute known as the Solomon Amendment. The Amendment states that any university that prohibits or prevents military recruiting on its campus can be penalized by the termination of substantial federal funding for research and other purposes. Congressman Frank pointed out that, although in its original form the statute permitted revocation of student financial assistance funds as a penalty, a 1999 bill sponsored by himself and Representative Tom Campbell (R-Cal.) eliminated that part of the threat.
Congressman Frank was followed by former Air Force service member Peter Chvany, who described how his bisexuality marked him for military discharge despite an impeccable record of service. He and Representative Frank further emphasized how conspicuously alone the United States military stands on this issue. Military forces with which U.S. forces are currently allied around the world have eliminated whatever policies of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation they may have had. The United States and Turkey are the only NATO countries that maintain policies of discrimination.

Aspen Education Group provides proven, specialized programs for teens struggling with behavior, academics, and other issues.
The Alternatives The Academy at Swift River in Massachusetts has a special program in Costa Rica. Mount Bachelor Academy in Oregon offers winter sports and trips abroad. These special programs work to open teens eyes to the larger world, and the group aspect helps them develop healthy POSITIVE peer relationships. One of the oldest wilderness programs in the country is the SUWS Adolescent Youth Program, located in Idaho. They use a search-and-rescue metaphor in an outdoor experiential program that helps adolescents work through the internal conflicts and emotional obstacles that have kept them from responding to parental efforts and treatment programs elsewhere. Their commitment is to identify these blocks so that our students can begin making progress again in their lives. SUWS also has a program in North Carolina Another long-established program specializes in teens with resistant behavioral issues, including substance abuse issues if necessary.

July 2002 Peace / International Programs In the New Hampshire Peace Action News (Summer 2002), Riva Pearson, Youth Coordinator for the NH office of AFSC, wrote of her encounters with international youth at an anti war march in Washington DC and the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She reflects, "If we want another world it is essential to have a US justice movement that is connected to movements in other countries. Global problems need global responses." Christian Social Action (July/August), a magazine published by the United Methodist Church, focused on the need for peace building in Colombia. AFSC's Peace for Colombia Campaign was mentioned among those working for peace. The magazine's editor, Gretchen Hakola, wrote of the game developed by AFSC to teach children of the road to peace, "What a wonderful metaphor, walking along the path with others, experiencing the pursuit of peace from within their world, seeking to "become" those who struggle to overcome violence." The Kansas City Star reports that 110 people gathered at the J.C. Nichols Fountain urging the Bush administration to
