Mission: Nichols College is committed to providing the best practically-oriented teacher preparation program for middle and secondary education (grades 5-12). The program prepares our students to become excellent teachers of Business, English, History, and Mathematics. Through partnerships with local schools, students observe, analyze, and practice teaching throughout their education coursework. Students graduate with the experience and knowledge necessary to teach today’s diverse children with standards-based curricula in a technological environment. Dynamic, innovative, conscientious, and collaborative, graduates from the Nichols College Teacher Preparation Program transform the lives of their students and the communities in which they work. Why teach?
  • Teachers make a difference in students’ lives. Teaching is a fulfilling career that lets you be creative and focus on a subject that interests you.
The United States is facing a major teacher shortage. Over the next ten years half the teachers will retire while student enrollment continues to increase. By 2010 schools will need to hire about 1.3 million new teachers.

Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)
Candidates seeking educator licensure in Massachusetts in either the Provisional or the Initial level are tested through the MTEL program. They must pass both the tests of Communication and Literacy Skills and the Subject Test, where available, for the license they are seeking. This requirement holds for all candidates for licensure, including classroom teachers, district and school administrators, and district and school support-service personnel. The purpose of the MTEL is to help identify candidates for licensure who have demonstrated the knowledge required for entry-level educators in Massachusetts public schools.

    Abstract
Given the high stakes of teacher testing, there is no doubt that every teacher test should meet the industry guidelines set forth in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing . Unfortunately, however, there is no public or private business or governmental agency that serves to certify or in any other formal way declare that any teacher test does, in fact, meet the psychometric recommendations stipulated in the Standards.

    III. Secondary Education (Grades 9-12)
Students may prepare for Massachusetts teacher certification in a secondary school in one of the following major concentrations: English, history, mathematics, biology, and modern foreign languages. To qualify, a student must complete appropriate courses in the major and fulfill the course requirements leading to a minor in secondary education. He or she must also pass the appropriate sections of the Massachusetts Educator Certification Tests. Major and Minor Requirements in Secondary Education
Massachusetts certification standards require demonstration of subject matter competence as well as teaching competence during the student teaching practicum. Each participating academic department has therefore developed a specific set of course requirements and other experiences in the major that fulfill the subject matter standards. Before students undertake a secondary education program, they must consult with their major advisor and the secondary education program coordinator. At that time, the student and department advisor will plan a major program that will meet the subject matter requirements of the Massachusetts certification standards, as well as the minor program to fulfill the student's minor concentration requirements in secondary school education. A student must take the following pre-practicum courses: Education 250, 260, 270 and 391; all of these must be completed before the practicum courses, Education 396 and 039. They must also take a course in Special Education, Education 251.
