McCann Regional Vocational Technical School North Adams State College North Adams State College, designated by the Carnegie Foundation, as the only public liberal arts college in Massachusetts and recognized as a high ranking Northern Tier liberal arts college in the 1994 ranking by U.S. News and World Report, educates approximately 1600 students in a residential setting, offering day and evening courses and special programs in graduate and continuing education. Under the leadership of President Thomas Aceto, the college has set a course for positive change. At the heart of these changes is the President's determination to develop more opportunities for NASC students to be exposed to the world of art. The fine arts program is being expanded and an arts management program has been developed which offers a number of internships at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts and the many other cultural and art-related institutions in the region. In 1994, NASC installed a new computer laboratory with 11 new multimedia Macintosh computers that will allow students to incorporate graphics, animation and video with sound in their work. Art students, in particular, will be able to create and view their own work on the screen before applying their ideas to canvas. The program's curriculum was presented at the Atlanta Association for Educational Journalism conference.

Vocational schools see a bright side to scores
By Aaron Nicodemus, Standard-Times staff writer
While there was some dramatic improvement in the performance of SouthCoast vocational students in this third year of MCAS testing, more than half are failing the English portion of the test, and two-thirds are failing math.
The failure rate at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School increased this year over last, in contrast to other vocational schools in the region. Four out of five Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech students failed the math portion of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System test this year.
MCAS has always been a sore point for vocational school administrators, who believe the test does not cover half of what vocational students learn, namely their trade skills.
Superintendents are supporting legislation that would create a separate test for vocational students, called a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency, that would measure both academic and trade skills. Vocational educators argue that the MCAS measures only the academic component of vocational education and ignores the applied knowledge learned in their trade. The legislation has the support of several area legislators, and will be filed Dec. 1.
The Certificate of Occupational Proficiency would not replace the MCAS, the educators say, but would more accurately test the abilities of vocational students. As the MCAS law stands right now, all high school students beginning with the class of 2003 must pass the MCAS to receive a diploma. With the legislation, vocational students could conceivably fail the MCAS, pass the vocational certificate and receive a high school diploma.

Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, Toxics Use Reduction Institute and its sister agency, the Office of Technical Assistance, Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, and local experts from industry and trade associations
The toxics use reduction project at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, a regional school encompassing 34 communities, drew on the skills and resources of several city departments and four different state agencies. This partnership developed an integrated course curriculum on TUR, as well as strategies for TUR in school shops, laboratories and custodial services. The goal was to decrease use of toxic materials and the waste generated to increase the health and safety of students, faculty and staff through reduced use of toxic substances, to prevent pollution through toxics use reduction, and to promote a sense of cooperation and responsibility within the school community as it related to TUR.
The 500 Smith students were equipped with knowledge about toxics not only in the school setting but also in the workplace. See the Vocational TUR Plan that was developed to the right.
