What About Socialization?

An article written by Mary Gardner

TIP:
One of my friends printed off worksheets from here with letters, numbers, etc. Instead of making numerous copies, she put each worksheet inside one of those plastic page protectors.
Using washable or dry-erase markers, her child can trace the worksheets. Afterwards, each page can be cleaned off with some mild detergent and water.

Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities will stem from the large number of teachers expected to retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; job outlook will vary by geographic area and subject specialty.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and "hands-on" learning to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. As teachers move away from the traditional repetitive drill approaches and rote memorization, they are using more "props" or "manipulatives" to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or adding and subtracting by playing board games. As children get older, they use more sophisticated materials such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers.

28 Ways to Teach Beginning Math Without Textbooks
All you need are ordinary items found in most homes
by Mary Ellen Carlise
Many parents fear math. A friend who recently began homeschooling called me to ask what curriculum I used when my son was a preschooler. When I told her I hadn't used a formal curriculum until second grade, she was shocked. "How did you know what to do? Where did you start? How did you know if he was working at grade level?" These are the most common questions regarding an early non-textbook style math education. Learning math doesn't have to come from a book to be successful. Research shows that children in early grades learn math more effectively when they use physical objects ("hands-on" math) in lessons, but we don't need research to tell us children love to play and do. It is easy to put together a sound early elementary curriculum using homemade manipulatives, games, and toys. Your library has a number of books on fun things to do with preschoolers. Many publishers offer free scope and sequence listing objectives for each subject and grade level. Remember, various companies offer various ideas. Scope and sequences will help you know what your child's peers are learning, and give you ideas on basic principles. Since even the most daring homeschoolers are usually using a formal textbook approach by the third grade, I've listed ideas only through the second grade. Depending on the interests of your child, grade level divisions may or may not be observed.

Homeschooling Kindergarten When I think of Kindergarten , I remember painting and snack and naptime. I remember playing in the little wooden kitchen with the play food and dishes. Kindergarten should remain to be a fun time - a memorable time for both the parent and the child. For my oldest child, I used a full-on curriculum from a Christian publisher for Kindergarten (I spent about $250) - and we did everything in the curriculum. The poor child. It seems that your first usually suffers the most while you learn what you're doing. For my next two children I used the following curriculum and programs that I put together myself. Language Arts: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons ( Compare prices We tried I always followed up with the Abeka 1st grade phonics book, Letters and Sounds 1, to insure they kept what they learned and had them reading in easy readers as soon as they were able. I found it best to have them read books that were a little easy for them so they would enjoy reading.
