Teaching Assistant: Deborah Lo we Hi! My name is Shannon Hilyer and I teach Kindergarten at The Mountain Community School. By utilizing the Core Knowledge Curriculum, our children are exposed to much more than most traditional public school kindergarten classes. We learn a variety of poetry, read classic fairy tales, as well as study math, reading, science, history or geography, every day. The children learn about the continents, five presidents, important people in science, the solar system and much, much more! We go even farther than our math book to learn about money, telling time, addition and even some subtraction. Kindergarten at The Mountain Community School is Cool! Shannon Hilyer is in her fourth year teaching in TMCS kindergarten. She attended Henderson County Schools and Clemson University, where she majored in Early Childhood Education. "My students have improved tremendously this year. Although there are no hard and fast standards to compare them to, I have watched them grow so much. Most of my students had fairly strong social skills when they arrived this year. Some were very quiet at first but by Christmas they were just different children. They have a wide range of abilities. I have one student who is already a strong reader. Some others had never been to pre-school or had any experience in an educational setting before.

What's happening in Kindergarten Math: October
During September your child was introduced to the math curriculum that he/she will be using for throughout the school year. The adopted mathematics curriculum for Portland Public Schools in grades Kindergarten through five is Investigations in Number, Data, and Space , published by Dale Seymour and Every Day Counts an rest of interactive calendar math program, published by Houghton Mifflin Company. The September math activities in Kindergarten set the stage for the classroom routines and activities that will continue throughout the year. Students practiced counting and estimation skills, learned about collecting attendance data, and were introduced to patterning through the monthly calendar grid. The instructional focus for October is patterns. The Investigations curriculum has students explore the concept of pattern through color, shape, size, position, and number. As the month progresses, the activities will grow in depth and perspective. The activities in the classroom allow students repeated opportunities to copy, create, and extend existing patterns using math manipulatives, common objects, and even each other!

School Programs The Guy E. Rowe Elementary School offers a wide range of learning opportunities for students. SAD 17 is in the process of revising and updating the curriculum, with social studies and technology being the most recent. During the 1999-00 school year, the Health and Physical Education curricula will be revised. One of the major components will be establishing specific goals (benchmarks) for students at each grade level. The benchmarks guide instruction in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. At Guy E. Rowe Elementary, students are provided many social opportunities through clubs, athletic and special activities. Some examples are: yearbook, D.A.R.E., Officer Phil, and PTO sponsored after school activities. To keep parents and community aware of the various activities at Rowe, a PTO Newsletter is published monthly as well as the Principal's Newsletter. Several classrooms publish Newsletters regularly. The school handbook contains general information, school policies, homework and discipline expectations. Kindergarten Program Students in Kindergarten work with language: speaking, listening, reading and writing. They learn that words express ideas, and thoughts. Students learn to make stories by putting together words. Some put their stories in a journal along with pictures. Most kindergarten students will be able to recognize and write upper and lower case letters and identify the letter sounds by the end of their Kindergarten year.

TEACHING EXCEL MATH Math is a series of building blocks. Without a good foundation, it is difficult to teach the higher level concepts. Excel Math was developed to enhance good teaching skills, not to change or replace them. Minimal in-servicing is needed to teach the curriculum. Fit it to the needs of your class each year. You will discover that concepts are repeated throughout the year so students will have continual exposure to them, and therefore a higher probability for retention.
LESSON SHEETS: Excel Math is provided in the form of Lesson Sheets for your particular class size. Both sides of the Lesson sheet are provided in the Teacher Edition opposite the lesson plan.
  • Designed for daily use in grades 1-6. Available for Kindergarten when it applies to the lesson.

Course Outlines are listed on a page of their own. Below is review of the programs offered.
Mathematics (MATA)
This program is built on a strong basis of mathematical analysis and abstract algebra. Each student will develop a program, through advisement, of eighteen credits of upper-level mathematics courses according to his or her own interests which reflects the student's goal: either graduate study or preparation for industry.
Mathematics (MATT)
In this program students take mathematics and professional courses which qualify for a mathematics degree and prepare them to meet the educational requirements for the New Jersey certificate to teach mathematics K-12. Students participate in student teaching experiences in both their junior and senior years.
Statistics (MATC)
This is an applied area of mathematics in which the student prepares for entry into business or industry as a statistician. The mathematical background of students in this program includes eighteen credits of required probability and statistics courses.
Mathematics Teaching Early Childhood (ECMA)
In this program early childhood education majors are required to complete a professional major in early childhood education and an academic major in mathematics. Upon graduation the early childhood major is eligible for certification to teach preschool through third grade and for certification to teach kindergarten through eighth grade.

NSF fellows make math more accessible
by Susan Griffith
What do potato peels or reflecting mirrors have to do with graduate-level mathematical concepts? Four National Science Foundation math fellows at CWRU will use vegetables and other household objects to help Cleveland high school and middle school teachers discover the amazing world of mathematics by manipulating objects in a new graduate course, "Mathematics and the Imagination." "It's unheard of to use manipulatives in a graduate-level course," said math fellow Brendan Foreman. The fellows have been spending half of their time in mathematical research at CWRU and the other half working at Collinwood and East Technical High Schools, as well as many other sites in the Cleveland Public Schools. The fellows lend their expertise to Cleveland school teachers through the Cleveland Collaborative for Math Education of the Cleveland Education Fund. The math fellows Foreman, Ben Ford, Naomi Klarreich, and Alina Stancu along with David Singer, professor of mathematics at CWRU, plan to make the graduate-level math course accessible to teachers. One of the obstacles the fellows have encountered is that many elementary teachers certified to teach kindergarten through grade eight have not had math classes in college, while those teachers with math certification have not had much exposure to the new methods of exploring mathematics through manipulatives.
