61. Math Standards
8 through 12 are organized differently than those for kindergarten through grade7 Many schools teach this material in traditional courses, while others teach
http://www.csdsac.org/Curriculum/math.htm
Mathematics Introduction to Mathematics Standards Numbers play a crucial role in our daily lives, whether we are buying a car or understanding the world and financial news reports we encounter every day. Well taught, mathematics is also a thing of beauty, exciting in its logic, elegance and coherence. It builds the analytic spirit on which intelligent and precise thinking depend. The assumption that students have to have special talents to be successful in mathematics has reigned for too long in this country. Everyone needs to have broad, deep and useful knowledge of mathematics, a fact other countries have long understood. Our global economic competitors expect and demand the acquisition of mathematical knowledge from all of their citizens. We need to keep pace. If they can do it, we can do it. By adoption of these standards, we open a new era in California and demystify mathematics. These standards express what every student in California can and needs to learn in mathematics. They are comparable to the standards of other countries, including Japan and Singapore, two high-performing countries on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). As such, these expectations for students are significantly higher than is currently the case, but we believe that with hard work and sound preparation in the early grades, all students will be able to achieve these standards. While the standards raise the bar dramatically, they in no way should be interpreted as a ceiling for any child. Students who can move more quickly through the material should be encouraged to do so; students who are able to exceed these standards should be given the opportunity to succeed at even higher levels of study.

Every year we provide a roundup of the best math software on the market. This has been a banner year for excellent new math titles! Computer software can really shine when it comes to teaching mathematics to students. As explained in the current Discussion Draft of Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) (www.nctm.org): Technology can make mathematics and its applications accessible in ways that were heretofore impossible. Students can learn more mathematics, more deeply with appropriate use of technological tools.

The NCTM standards were written in 1989. Not one mathematician had direct input into those standards. Jaime Escalante, the famous math teacher from the movie Stand and Deliver said,"Whoever wrote these must have been a PE teacher." In 1992 California widely adopted standards based math programs. In 1994, only two years after implementing new math, their 8th graders' scores in computation dropped from 86 to 58. After four years their fourth graders were fourth lowest in the nation, and California got rid of their NCTM Standards based math program. In October 1999, two hundred university mathematicians and scholars, including seven Nobel Laureates, signed an open letter to the US Secretary of Education urging him to withdraw his recommendation of constructivist math programs. Parents all over the country are fighting to remove whole math programs from their schools. There are just too many red flags for parents to buy into these programs. The emperor definitely has no clothes!! In conclusion, I would like to pose a question. What is the purpose of public education? Do you desire academic achievement for the children of our state or is it enough for them to learn social and life skills? A good, solid foundation in mathematics will open doors for our children, but if new math takes over in Utah, all of our children will be left behind.

I'm Ready for Kindergarten: Huggly's Sleepover
Don't let the title fool you-all kids are ready for this edutaining monster bash! You don't have to be ready for kindergarten to love Huggly's Sleepover! Incredible animation, well-developed characters and excellent content makes this software a hot pick for preschoolers or 1st graders! Perfect for the classroom or for at-home play, this software goes beyond the call of duty in helping kids build academic and problem solving skills. Huggly is one of the most adorable monsters you'll ever meet! Friendly, and definitely not shy, he talks to kids and makes friends with them as they join Huggly and his buddies in preparing for the Annual Monster Sleepover Party. Best of all, your kids are invited! Childen this age are so excited about sleepover parties (especially if they older brothers or sisters). After playing this software, don't be surprised if they beg to have a friend spend the night! Hey, it beats monsters under the bed! Kids stomp their feet to the lively music as soon as they begin playing the CD-ROM. This is definitely a software classica popular pick with kids which gets plenty of replayability!

Top What these workers do Kindergarten and elementary school teachers teach children to read, write, speak, do math, and much more. They use games, music, art, films, computers, and other tools to teach children basic skills. When children learn, they feel good and will do well in school later on. When they grow up and go to work and become parents, they will do a good job because of what they learned when they were young.
Most kindergarten and elementary school teachers teach several subjects to one class of children. In some schools, two or more teachers work as a team. They teach a group of students at least one subject. In other schools, a teacher may teach one special subject to a number of classes. Usually they teach music, art, reading, science, math, or gym. Some teach classes that are filled with students from different grades.
Kindergarten and elementary school teachers may write with chalk on a chalkboard. They also may use films, slides, overhead projectors, or computers. All these things help children learn in different ways. With computers, children can talk with students in other countries. Computers also help students solve math problems. Sometimes they help children learn to speak English better. Many teachers use computers to record the children's grades. Teachers have to keep learning to make sure that they know how to use computers and other machines in their classes.
