Accenter
Whether you are typing French accents, Spanish accents, or math symbols, most word processors don't provide the flexibility you need. Adding special characters, commonly used wingdings, or greek letters to your word processing documents can be a nuisance as well. But Accenter works equally well as a Spanish word processor, a French word processor, or a math word processor, because of its configurable setup for inserting special characters.

Version:
System:
Any 32 bit Windows platform
Subject: Foreign language/math
Grades: Any
Description: Word processor with special features for foreign language and math.
This word processor is perfect for teachers of mathematics and foreign languages. It's great for anyone who regularly uses obscure symbols in their documents. No longer do you have to use bizarre 'alt key codes' to get the symbols you use most. In fact, Accenter lets you choose the key combinations that are most comfortable for you. What if the key combinations you want to use are not the same as the combinations others want to use? No problem! The customized settings are tied to your Windows user name, so each user can have different settings.
How does Accenter work? The user sets up 'symbol groups' (or uses the predefined groups). Each symbol group has its own hotkey combination. For example, the greek alphabet might be activated by pressing [ALT-G]. Within this group, there can be up to 20 symbols, and the keys associated with them. For example, the letter 'a' is associated with the Greek letter 'alpha'. Thus 'alpha' is inserted by pressing [ALT-G], then pressing 'a'.

The hardest thing about doing word problems is taking the English problem and translating it into math. Usually, once you get the math equation, you're fine. The actual math involved is often fairly simple. But actually getting the equation can seem nearly impossible. What follows is a list of hints and helps. To really learn how to do word problems, you'll just have to practice, practice, practice. The first step to effectively working word problems is to read the problem entirely. Don't try to start solving anything when you've only read half a sentence. Try to get a feel for the whole problem, and try to see what information you have, and what you still need. The second step is to work in an organized manner. Label variables with what they stand for, draw and label pictures neatly, and explain your reasoning as you go along. And you need to determine what the problem is actually asking for. You need to do this for two reasons:
  • Working clearly will help you think clearly, and
