School of Mathematics and Statistics
General Overview Located within the , the School of Mathematics and Statistics has the primary responsibility for the teaching of mathematics and statistics throughout the university. The School has 16 academic staff, of whom 11 are accommodated on The Mawson Lakes campus, 5 on the City West campus and 1 at Whyalla. In addition to teaching within the undergraduate and Honour program, a significant proportion of the school's teaching commitments involves the provision of service courses to other schools and divisions. The school has 4 general staff members, namely three administrative staff and a computer systems officer.
Location of the School
The School of Mathematics and Statistics is based at the Mawson Lakes Campus . One third of staff have their offices located at the City West Campus The Mawson Lakes Campus of the University of South Australia is a modern campus with excellent facilities for students' recreational, sporting, and cultural activities, as well as all the study facilities that you would expect at a University. The School of Mathematics and Statistics occupies a modern building with ready access to well-equipped computing laboratories and teaching facilities. Students can avail themselves of a wide range of state-of-the-art computing equipment and software.
Research Activities
The Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM) was created to unite the University's mathematical and statistical expertise under a single umbrella. At the end of 1994 CIAM was approved as one of the University's designated research centres.

The importance of mathematics
The work of mathematicians may be divided into pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics seeks to advance mathematical knowledge for its own sake rather than for any immediate practical use. For example, a mathematician may create a system of geometry for an imaginary world where objects have more dimensions than just length, width, and depth. Applied mathematics seeks to develop mathematical techniques for use in science and other fields.
The boundary between pure and applied mathematics is not always clear. Ideas developed in pure mathematics often have practical applications, and work in applied mathematics frequently leads to research in pure mathematics.
Nearly every part of our lives involves mathematics. It has played an essential role in the development of modern technologythe tools, materials, techniques, and sources of power that make our lives and work easier.
In everyday life, we use mathematics for such simple tasks as telling time from a clock or counting our change after making a purchase. We also use mathematics for such complex tasks as making up a household budget or balancing our cheque book. Cooking, driving, gardening, sewing, and many other common activities involve mathematical calculations. Mathematics is also part of many games, hobbies, and sports.

Faculty of Mathematics General Laboratory Safety Procedures
All students must read the information in this document with regard to laboratory safety and emergency procedures prior to the first laboratory session. Effort has been made to address situations that may pose a hazard in the lab but the information and instructions provided cannot be considered all-inclusive. Students must adhere to written and verbal safety instructions throughout the academic term. Since additional instructions may be given at the beginning of laboratory sessions, it is important that all students arrive at each session on time. It is expected that each student will work in a responsible manner and exercise good judgement and common sense. If at any time you are not sure how to handle a particular situation, ask your Teaching Assistant or Instructor for advice.
General Laboratory Instructions
  • Eating and Drinking - or placing objects such as pens or pencils in your mouth may pose a danger to you while you are in the laboratory.
  • Work Area - Keep the work area clear of all materials except those needed for your work. Coats should be hung in the hall or placed in a locker. Extra books, purses, etc. should be kept away from equipment, that requires air flow or ventilation to prevent overheating.

    General Education Requirements
In September 1994 the Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Illinois Community College Board adopted the General Education Core Curriculum developed by the Illinois Articulation Initiative. This General Education Core Curriculum is intended to be the model for the lower-division transfer General Education requirements on a statewide basis. The following is taken from the mathematics section of that document: The mathematics component of general education focuses on quantitative reasoning to provide a base for developing a quantitatively literate college graduate. Every college graduate should be able to apply simple mathematical methods to the solution of real-world problems. A quantitatively literate college graduate should be able to:
    • interpret mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables, and schematics, and draw inferences from them; represent mathematical information symbolically, visually, numerically, and verbally; use arithmetic, algebraic, geometric, and statistical methods to solve problems;

    Syllabi
The syllabi presented are the ones in current use. These have been in effect from September 2000. From Form 2 upwards the Area Secondary syllabus has been divided into two parts, namely the Core and the Extension sections. This has been done in order to cater for the levels of different ability in our schools. On the other hand the Junior Lyceum syllabus has been prepared to cover, up to Form 3, most of the IIB Matsec paper topics. In this way the student can from Form 4 upwards decide which Matsec paper to tackle according to his ability. The division welcomes any opinion or suggestion on these syllabi. Exams
The examination papers set in June 2001 in all levels are being made available so that they can be downloaded for revision purposes. Remarks and/or comments are welcome. Software
This section gives a brief description of the different software which has been introduced in the secondary level, namely Microsoft Excel Cabri Géomètre Derive and MicroWorlds Logo Tests
This part of the site contains five sets of mental papers, one for each form in the Area Secondary level. Each set is made up of 10 papers each containing 10 questions. These tests were prepared by the subject coordinators with the aim of providing the teacher and student alike with specimen papers of the mental section of the examination. A similar set of papers for the Junior Lyceum has already been prepared and will be included in the site as soon as the proof reading is effected. Links
