It is situated south of the equator and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Almost in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the island is remote from the mainland. The nearest neighbor is the island of Reunion (220 km to the southwest), Madagascar is about 880 km to the west and India is 3,860 km to the northeast of Mauritius. Together with the islands of Rodrigues and Reunion it forms the Mascarennes Archipelago.
Mauritius is a small fragment of a large volcanic chain, drowned in the Indian Ocean. T,he island has an area of 1,860 square kilometers and is made up of a central plateau gradually rising towards the southwest where it reaches its highest point at 800 meters with the Piton de la Riviere Noire. Due to the volcanic origin of the island, this plateau is surrounded with what has remained from the primary crater - the mountain ranges with fantastically shaped masses of basalt and some isolated peaks. Numerous rivers, streams and waterfalls crisscross the central plateau.
Mauritius boasts a marvelous extended coastline of almost 350 km. Long beaches covered by finest sugar-white sand are sheltered by a colorful coral reef. Mountains with abrupt slopes, surrounding the central plateau, overlook the coastal plain. As a country, Mauritius includes the inhabited island of Rodrigues, some 560 km to the northeast and other nearby coral atolls such as Cargados Carajos and Agalega.

It rises gently from the northern coast to a central plateau, culminating in a steep drop towards the south with peaks of weird and abstract shapes. Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire is the highest of these at some 2,700 feet. Remnants of volcanic activity dot the island from extinct craters, like Trou aux Cerfs, and lava boulders abound, many of these have been gathered into cairns during land clearing for sugar cane planting. The island’s surrounding coral reef is broken in several places, allowing surf to crash through; the most spectacular and largest break is on the southern coast between Souillac and Le Bouchon. Between the breaks the white coral sand beaches stretch invitingly, presenting a coastline that’s, interestingly, both serene and rugged.

    A Brief Description
Geological History Mountain Ranges Weather and Climate ... Bibliography
A brief description Barely 1865 kilometres square, the island of Mauritius is small by any standards. Yet it has a diversity of geographical features that makes the landscape always interesting to look at. Basically, the island is made up of undulating uplands varying in height from 300 metres to a maximum of 600 metres in the south. Surrounding the uplands are mountain ranges and plains. Numerous rivers flow to the sea fed entirely by rain fall. Last but not least, stretches of coral sand beaches are found along part of the coast line.
    Geological History
Except for beaches and coral reef formation, the island is entirely of volcanic origin. Three major periods of volcanic activity resulted in the formation of the island. The first period, called the Emergence and Older Series or the Ancient Series, lasted from 10 million years ago to about 5 million years ago. This period caused the emergence of the island. The Ancient series can be further broken down into two distinct parts: The Breccia Series from 10 million years ago to 7.8 million years ago and the Old Series Lavas from 7.6 million years ago to 5 million years ago.
The second period called the Early Volcanic Series or Intermediate Series lasted from 3 ½ million years ago to 1.7 million years ago.

he Republic of Mauritius is situated in the south west of the Indian Ocean, approximately 2,400 kilometres off the south east coast of Africa, and is just north of the Tropic of Capricorn.
The island is only 67 kilometres in length and 46 kilometres at its widest point, and has a total area of 2,040 sq. km.
Mauritius owes its origins to volcanic activity. Although the volcanoes are long since dormant, they have left their mark on the profile and landscape of the island. From the north coast the land rises gradually to the highest parts of the island. The central plateau reaches a height of 580 metres and is edged by four mountain ranges, namely, the Moka Range encircling Port Louis, the Bambous Mountains in the east and the Black River and Savanne Ranges in the south west. From the central plain the land descends more sharply to the south coast. With the high rainfall of the interior, numerous small rivers cut through the landscape to the coast. Coral reefs surround most of the coast except the south.
As a political entity, the Republic includes not only the island of Mauritius but also the tiny island of Rodrigues some 563 kilometres to the east, as well as the Cargados Carajos Archipelago (St. Brandon) and the two virtually uninhabited Agalega islands, 400 kilometres to the north east and 1,000 kilometres to the north of Mauritius respectively.
