Ancient Maya Ancient Mayan Culture The Mayas were one of the most brilliant and powerful ancient indigenous civilization. Their ancient civilization was present from 2,000 BC to 1521 AD. The Maya world was composed of three layered domains: the heaven, the middleworld of earth, and the underworld. They believed that a lot of these regions were interconnected which produced sacred power. The sky was represented by a great crocodilian monster. This Cosmic Monster made the rains when it shed its blood in the supernatural counterpoint to the royal sacrifices on the earth below(Schele 1990). The Underworld was sometimes called Xbalba(Schele 1990), but it is possible that the original Mayan understanding was to believe that Xibalba as the "parallel unseen" Otherworld in which the Maya kings could pass in a trance. In all aspects, the life of the jungle became a major part of the Mayan. The jaguar is ever-present in the Mayan writing, religion and folklore. It also stood as the "companion spirit to the most powerful Lords". In addition, it was known as the Lord of the middleworld. It could as well as hunt by day and by night. The eagle was the chief predator in the upperworld. This animal was known as the Lord of the upperworld. The hummingbird was associated with the bloodletting ritual performed in worship to the gods. The bat represented the unknown, the night and the dark. The turtle was associated with the rain god and the maize god. The jungle also provided food, medicine, and building materials for the Mayas. Statues, cities, calendars and art were all major places where animals frequently appeared.

Photos from Guatemala and Mexico. Pictures of Maya temples and pyramids at Tikal, Palenque, Uxmal and Chichen Itza... HOME The Maya Today Mysteries of a lost civilization The Maya of central America reached remarkable intellectual and artistic heights during the Classic period of their great civilization, between around AD 250 and 900. They built huge temples and pyramids, inscribed stone monuments, made major advances in mathematics and astronomy, and developed complex hieroglyphic scripts. But in part of their lands, their great civilization was doomed to undergo a mysterious collapse that was to leave mighty temples and pyramids abandoned for centuries.... Tikal
During the Classic period of the Maya civilization, the great city of Tikal thrived in dense lowland jungle of what is now part of Guatemala. Buildings ranged from simple thatched-roofed homes to palaces and lofty pyramids topped by temples. In the ceremonial heart of Tikal are pyramids that include the highest known structure built in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. The population of Tikal may have reached more than 50,000, including the inhabitants of its peripheral and rural areas.
Temple I at Tikal - the Temple of the Great Jaguar - sits on a towering pyramid built over the tomb of King Hasaw Chan K'awil.

The Mayan Calendar
The Maya calendar was adopted by the other Mesoamerican nations, such as the Aztecs and the Toltec, which adopted the mechanics of the calendar unaltered but changed the names of the days of the week and the months. An Aztec calendar stone is shown at right (below). The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the Long Count , the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and the Haab (civil calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the length of the year. A typical Mayan date looks like this: 12.18.16.2.6, 3 Cimi 4 Zotz. 12.18.16.2.6 is the Long Count date.
3 Cimi is the Tzolkin date.
4 Zotz is the Haab date.
    What is the Long Count?
The Long Count is really a mixed base-20/base-18 representation of a number, representing the number of days since the start of the Mayan era. It is thus akin to the Julian Day Number. The basic unit is the kin (day), which is the last component of the Long Count. Going from right to left the remaining components are:

http://www.oneworldjourneys.com/jaguar/history.html
The ancient Maya developed advanced systems of astronomy and mathematics, an accurate calendar system, extensive trade routes, and a religion dominated by blood sacrifices. Without benefit of metal tools, beasts of burden, or even the wheel, they were still masters of architecture, building elaborate pyramids and sprawling cities. The collapse of these great cities is a mystery only now being explained, but the modern Maya remain tenacious survivors, like the jaguar itself, at the dawn of this new millennium. The ancient Maya lived in a vast area covering parts of present-day Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, and the western areas of Honduras and El Salvador. From the Pacific Ocean in the south, a narrow strip of coastal lowlands rises to a belt of mountains, active volcanoes, and highlands. Then the terrain drops onto limestone-based, flat lowlands in the central area all the way north to the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike the later Aztecs, the Maya had no central king ruling a vast empire. Instead, there were as many as 20 politically sovereign polities, similar to ancient Greece city-states. Each major city had its own ruler and noble class supported by tribute received from smaller cities and the surrounding farm villages.

Most academicians begin the study of human civilization with the culture of ancient Sumer, which rose to datable prominence beginning ~3000 B.C.E. with that culture's use of writing. But when we look further back into the mists of those most ancient times, we hear whispers of other worlds mysterious worlds like Atlantis, Lemuria, Mu.... Did these civilizations ever exist? Remember, everyone thought the ancient city of Troy was a mythical city invented by Homer... until Heinrich Schliemann found it. Did ancient calendar systems, like the Phoenix Cycle, influence our western calendar? How is archaeology filling in the blank spots in our prehistory? What images do ancient origin myths and legends paint of the world before ~3000 B.C.E.? Can we use anteprecession as an adjunct in deciphering ancient monuments? On the trail of ancient stories, history, legend, and artifact as clues to Earth's ancient reality....
