STORY FROM GUATEMALA
Tikal, the Ancient Mayan City of Guatemala
4/24/99 by Jean-Philippe Soule My favorite view was from the top of a pyramid called Mundo Perdido (the lost world). The climb offered a breathtaking view of Temple 1, 2, 3 and 4 towering above the tree canopy. They seemed isolated and preserved forever. What surprised me in Tikal was the lack of tourists. It is remarkably uncrowded for a site which is magnificent and world famous. I came for the opening of the park at 6:00 AM out of fear of having to fight my way through a crowd during mid-day. A few tourists and school groups were present between 10:00 AM and noon, then the place was deserted. Most people preferred to return to their hotel or alternatively sit in the protection of a fan in a restaurant instead of climbing temples under the powerful heat. In the late afternoon the only visitors left were howler monkeys which roared like an army of lions. Tikal is one of those places you just wished you had more time to visit longer. Your interest could be art, anthropology, archeology, history, ecology, bird watching or just to look for a peaceful place in a beautiful rainforest, whatever your purpose, Tikal will easily seduce you and remain etched in your memory. "Sweet as Honey"
Honey Lore: Winners Honey in Early America
In early America, colonists considered honey a youth tonic and healer. Here are some of the remedies
For insomnia: 1 tbsp honey in glass of warm water.
For stomach ulcers and nerves: Small amounts sipped frequently.
For insect bites, rashes, and wrinkles: Apply locally.
As a gargle: Honey with lemon juice and whiskey. Mead was a drink made by colonists. Mix 1 quart honey with 2 quarts water. Simmer for 1 hour. Cool then add 1/2 package yeast. Let stand until fermentation ceases. Strain and bottle. It was used as a "tonic for insomnia". Submitted by Taylor (6-1/2) and Rachel (5-1/2) Wilcox Hagerstown MD Taylor and Rachel found this information in "Colonial Kitchen Herbs" by Ferne Shelton (Hutcraft, 1972) while studying for a home school project on Frontiersmen. They love honey on their homemade bread and sent hugs to Big Burl Bear. Honey in Ancient History Honey was the only source of sugar available to the ancients and was valued for medicinal benefits.

The Maya The Maya are not a homogenous people, but rather a group made up of numerous ethnicities with their own languages and customs.
The rise of the Mayan culture began around 1800 BC. The classical period (when the culture at its peak) is considered to be between the end of the 3rd and the 9th centuries AD.
In the post-classical period (from 900 AD until the Spanish conquest), important centers were suddenly deserted or were conquered by foreign peoples. Wars, as well as ecological, economic and social problems led to cultural demise.
Exceptional achievements of the Maya include their hieroglyphic writing, their knowledge of astronomy and mathematics, and a precise calendar system. Artistically, architecture, sculpture using stone and stucco, ceramics and mural painting are noteworthy.

    77. Mayan History
As usual with ancient nations, it is difficult in the beginning to separate mythfrom history, their earliest the sungod common to the whole mayan stock.
    http://www.crystalinks.com/mayanhistory.html
    MAYAN HISTORY
The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatan around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, El Salvador, and northern Belize. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tools. They were also skilled farmers, clearing large sections of tropical rain forest and, where groundwater was scarce, building sizeable underground reservoirs for the storage of rainwater. The Maya were equally skilled as weavers and potters, and cleared routes through jungles and swamps to foster extensive trade networks with distant peoples. Many people believe that the ancestors of the Maya crossed the Bering Strait at least 20,000 years ago. They were nomadic hunter-gatherers. Evidence of settled habitation in Mexico is found in the Archaic period 5000-1500 BC - corn cultivation, basic pottery and stone tools. The first true civilization was established with the rise of the Olmecs in the Pre-Classic period 1500 BC -300 AD. The Olmecs settled on the Gulf Coast, and little is known about them.
