If We Only Had the Grain.... One absolutely sacrosanct tradition in archaeology is the field song. For reasons that have yet to be explained to me, if you get a group of archaeologists in the same place (read: pub) at the same time (3:30 am) and in the same state (convivial semi-sobriety), they sing. What they sing is usually fractured song lyricsI remember most clearly a song about the great collapse of the Pueblo civilization, sung to the Wabash Cannonball. After engaging in this sort of behavior for the first time, when I arrived home I wrote my own song, and here it is. Sing it out loud and embarrass yourselfit's to the tune of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg 's wonderful "

Excavating the News
One of my all time main irritations as a working archaeologist has been reading about archaeology in the press. Don't you just hate it? You're reading along in a newspaper account of some archaeological event, and you read a paragraph that you know can't be right, but you have no immediate recourse to figure out what's going on. Like the Brickell site in Florida, for example. You read it; there were a couple of basalt celts and the world press trumpeted that the Brickell site was a ceremonial site for outcast Mayans. It used to drive me crazy. Now, however, it strikes me that with the Internet we have the resources to find out, if not the Truth, at least further details, and maybe a second opinion. If only we had the time! Well, maybe I do, and maybe I've been hanging around the Internet long enough to know where to find out some better information. . So here's what I'm going to do. When there's a story on the news services that seems a bit shy on facts, or I can find a collection of news stories that together bring the topic to life, I'll link to it right on my front page, on the right hand side, right under the current feature article. In some cases, like

Did the Sun Trigger Mayan Collapse?
Mayan pyramid. Could past civilizations have floundered because of a change in climate? It's a question that is incredibly tricky to answer. First, you have to know that a civilization flourished and subsequently perished. Then, you need evidence suggesting that changes in the historical climate were responsible for a civilization's downfall.
Solar Flares Caused Drought
Now some scientists think they've teased out evidence that the famous Mayan civilization that flourished on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula may have wasted away because of a periodic drought. They think that the drought resulted from episodic solar events called solar forcings, or flares, that resulted in a few years of warmer drier weather every 206 years or so. That the Mayans would perish in the face of drought is not an unreasonable idea, since they were especially dependent on rainfall. You see, the Yucatan peninsula has little in the way of extra water stored in subsurface water tables, so a period of dry weather could be disastrous to people trying to grow crops. David Hodell, of the University of Florida, and his colleagues discovered the evidence out of an ancient muddy lake bottom located on the Yucatan peninsula. They removed a 4.9-meter core that represented a 2,600-year climate record from Lake Chichancanab. To read ancient climate, the researchers focused on gypsum levels in the lake's core.
