A recent IPCC report summarizes a range of global mean sea-level rise predictions ranging from 9 to 48cm for low emissions and 16 to 69cm for the high emissions scenarios by 2100 (Houghton et al However, scientific information indicates that relative sea level responses worldwide are characteristically complex and spatially heterogeneous. Evidence of Holocene sea level change is particularly important because it provides information on sea levels during climatically warmer periods than present. As well as providing evidence to constrain potential future sea level variations, Holocene sea level change evidence enhances our understanding of earth rheology by estimating the mechanical response of the Earth to changes in surface loading by ice and meltwater.
