President William F. McKinley
Served 1897-1901, 1901 (assassinated in office) William F. McKinley was born January 29, 1843, at the family home in Niles, Ohio. McKinley got his start in politics from Rutherford Hayes, who was his commander during the Civil War. McKinley was only 19 when he joined the Union Army, and he and Hayes became and remained friends for many years. For 14 years, McKinley was a Congressman, then twice Governor of Ohio. He and his advisers invented the campaign button. He married Ida Saxton on Janunary 25, 1871, and they had two children, but both died young. Ida was sick much of her life, and McKinley took care of her. Elected in 1896, McKinley took office after almost 50 years when America had no international conflict. In 1898, the U.S. Battleship Maine was blown up in Havana, Cuba. While McKinley tried to keep the peace, he could not do so, and the U.S. declared war on Spain. Spain lost the war, and as a result, pulled out of Cuba and gave Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the U.S. Like Hayes, McKinley was a Republican. His first Vice President was Garrett Hobart and his second was Theodore Roosevelt, a hero of the Spanish-American War.

The 1896 election formed a major turning point in American politics. McKinley advocated the tariff as a way of protecting business and labor from foreign imports and defended the gold standard against his Democratic opponent William Jennings Bryan, who espoused the free coinage of silver, which would have inflated currency and aided debtors. The Republicans ran an efficient, lavishly financed campaign, and McKinley won the election by the largest popular margin since the Civil War. His administration enacted a higher tariff in 1897, committed the country to the gold standard in 1900, and generally promoted business confidence. Probably in part because of these policies, the economy recovered from a severe depression, and the Republicans became identified with economic prosperity, which made them the dominant party until the 1930s. McKinley received public vindication when he defeated Bryan again and was reelected by a still larger vote in 1900.

President William McKinley's final address
[PRINTED IN FULL - THE FINAL PUBLIC ADDRESS OF PRESIDENT WILLIAM MCKINLEY, GIVEN ON SEPTEMBER 5, 1901, IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK.]
"President Milburn, Director-General Buchanan, Commissioners, Ladies and Gentlemen:-
"I am glad to be again in the city of Buffalo and exchange greetings with her people, to whose generous hospitality I am not a stranger, and with whose good will I have been repeatedly and signally honored. To-day I have additional satisfaction in meeting and giving welcome to the foreign representatives assembled here, whose presence and participation in this Exposition have contributed in so marked a degree to its interest and success. To the Commissioners of the Dominion of Canada and the British colonies, the French colonies, the Republics of Mexico and of Central and South America, and the commissioners of Cuba and Puerto Rico, who share with us in this undertaking, we give the hand of fellowship and felicitate with them upon the triumphs of art, science, education and manufacture, which the old has bequeathed to the new century.
"Expositions are the timekeepers of progress. They record the world's advancement. They stimulate the energy, enterprise and intellect of the people, and quicken human genius. They go into the home. They broaden and brighten the daily life of the people. They open mighty storehouses of information to the student. Every exposition, great or small, has helped to some onward step. Comparison of ideas is always educational, and as such instructs the brain and hand of man. Friendly rivalry follows, which is the spur to industrial improvement, the inspiration to useful invention and to high endeavor in all departments of human activity. It exacts a study of the wants, comforts and even the whims of the people and recognizes the efficacy of high quality and new prices to win their favor.

He enlisted as a private during the Civil War and distinguished himself in action earning the rank of major in 1865. He served in Congress from 1876 to 1890 and became a strong supporter of protective tariffs. McKinley was elected governor of Ohio in 1891, serving a second term in 1893. By this time, McKinley was considered an important national leader. In 1896, the Republican national convention nominated him for president, on a platform stressing protective tariffs and the maintenance of a monetary standard based on gold. Presidency
From the beginning of his administration, President McKinley was concerned about the Cuban insurrection. On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine was sunk on an official visit to Havana. President McKinley attempted to prevent war and endeavored to persuade the Spanish government to adopt a conciliatory policy with the Cuban insurrectionists. The Spanish government yielded too late to restrain the popular demand in the United States for intervention. On April 20, Congress adopted a resolution declaring war against Spain. A peace protocol ended hostilities on August 12, 1898. Under the peace treaty signed at Paris on December 10, 1898

William McKinley was the 25 th president of the United States. He was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio, a town of about 300 people at that time. He was the 7 th rd regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which was under the command of Rutherford B. Hayes, the future U.S. president. His first battle was at Carnifax Ferry, W. Virginia. He was later promoted to commissary sergeant and at the Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862), while his regiment was under intense enemy fire, and against the advice of his superiors, he took food to the troops. Because of this act of bravery, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. By the time the war was over he had attained the rank of brevet major. William returned to Poland, Ohio where he studied law with Judge Charles Glidden. In 1866 he entered law school in Albany, New York, but he did not graduate. In 1867 he was admitted to the bar in Warren, Ohio. He moved to Canton, Ohio where two of his sisters were schoolteachers and he got a job working for Judge George Belden. Belden was so over-burdened with cases that he offered one to McKinley. McKinley won the case and so impressed the judge that he was paid $25.00 for the case and was given a job. Later, McKinley opened his own law office and became active in the politics of the Republican Party. He was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Stark County in 1869.

A detailed review of the assassination of president william mckinley.

THE McKINLEY ASSASSINATION HISTORICAL SITE
On September 6, 1901, in Buffalo, New York at the Pan-American Exposition, a young man with a slender face and blonde-brown hair walked up to the President of the United States in a greeter's line at the Temple of Music exhibit with a handkerchief bandaged around his right hand. Under the handkerchief was a .32 caliber Johnson revolver. Two quick shots rang out.
The young man who shot President William McKinley was a twenty-eight year old named LEON CZOLGOSZ (pronounced cholgosh). Czolgosz was an independent anarchist, who though having met with prominent anarchists of the day such as Emma Goldman, had no legitimate connection with them. The Anarchist movement fiercely believed that all rulers, governing officials, rich capitalists, and ordained clergy should be wiped out. Czolgosz believed the death of the President of the United States would generate positive press of his movement and send fear through other leaders warning them to change their ways.
