I do detailed mechanical designs for pieces of set that need to fly or move. Basically, we don't make scenery, but we make scenery possible. How did you get started?
Towards the end of my Mechanical Engineering degree I wrote to Unusual Rigging and asked to do a work placement with them. During my two weeks there I was able to get involved with their work at the Dome and at the end of the year I got a call to offer me the job. Previous jobs/experience:
Apart from my degree, I designed sets for the theatre at university. I'd always done carpentry and mechanical projects at home, but university was the first time I'd applied those skills to the stage.

Mechanical Engineer - We Make Machines… and More!
Have you ever wondered what an engineer does? When I was six and said I wanted to be an engineer, I was thinking in terms of driving trains. When I was ten, I thought engineers built engines. Period. It wasn't until I was in high school that I learned the truth: engineers build everything! From the space shuttle to the Golden Gate Bridge, from the cars we drive to the cans we drink from, from the chair you're sitting on to the computer monitor you're looking at, engineers of one kind or another were in on the planning and the production. There are at least 25 kinds of engineers, and the broadest in scope is mine . . . I'm a mechanical engineer. Engineers do practical design and production work using the principles of science and mathematics to come up with economically viable solutions to technical problems. In shorter words, they design and build needed tools, products, and systems.

    M. E's act as forensic engineers, finding the causes of product failures.

In a case where an auto accident caused an accident the next day, our consultant was called in to pinpoint the cause. In this case, on the previous day the drums of water protecting a protruding guard rail at a highway ramp were hit, spilling water with antifreeze on the roadway. The next day a man braked his car at this stilt spot, spun out of control and wrecked. The tire manufacturer was sued, the victim claiming the tires did not grip the wet road adequately. Our consultant measured the friction coefficient of such tires on a similarly wetted surface and testified on how the results related to tire braking standards. This is like many cases that M. E. forensic engineers investigate; e.g., why welds break, stadium structures collapse, auto brakes fail, injuries occur from rotating machinery, etc.
