Mechanics of Materials
The Mechanics of Materials research group in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering conducts research in a broad range of problems relating to deformation, creep, fatigue and fracture of a broad range of heterogeneous engineering materials. Special emphasis is placed on modeling the effects of the microstructure of the material on macroscopic stress-strain damage response; nonlinear and time-dependent material behavior; and structure-processing property relations. A full complement of analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches are employed in various projects. Research areas include experimental and computational plasticity; ductile and brittle fracture of metallics under quasistatic and dynamic loading; behavior of composites, ferroelectric and shape memory materials; multiaxial fatigue; rolling and fretting contact; metal forming and associated finite deformation effects; viscoplasticity; impact mechanics; micromechanics of monolithic and composite materials; nonlinear and time dependent fracture mechanics; creep; creep-fatigue; and mechanics of interfaces/interphases.

MDSolids is educational software for students taking the Mechanics of Materials course (also commonly called Strength of Materials or Mechanics of Deformable Solids). This course is typically a part of civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering programs and a number of related programs. The software features educational routines for beams, flexure, torsion members, columns, axial structures, statically indeterminate structures, trusses, section properties, and Mohr's circle analysis including stress transformations and strain transformations. Introduction
The main focus of the Mechanics of Materials Laboratory is to address some critical issues in the interdisciplinary area between mechanics and materials science. It is now increasingly realized by researchers in the mechanics community that traditional mechanics approach to mechanical behavior of materials is no longer adequate since materials are becoming extremely complicated. An understanding of the materials' microstructures and the micromechanisms is crucial to the understanding of the deformation and failure processes. On the other hand, the materials community feels a strong need to make use of the mechanics tools developed over many decades to solve materials problem at a microscopic level. The Mechanics of Materials Laboratory uses experimental, modeling, and computational tools to investigate micromechanisms of deformation and failure, develop mechanistic models, and predict material behavior under different loading conditions.

Mechanics of Materials is concerned with the characterization of the mechanical response and ultimate failure of material systems. This involves understanding a range of phenomena from microscopic mechanisms, such as the interaction of dislocations in a single crystal, to macroscopic phenomena, such as crack propagation through a structure. More recent efforts also include a focus on bio-inspired "soft" material systems composed of polymers and surfactants which often have solid-like character at least over finite time and length scales. Nonlinear Composite Materials: The tremendously successful studies of the effective or average properties of composite materials have mostly dealt so far with linear constitutive behaviors. However, more often than not nonlinear effects are critical in the understanding of the effective properties of real engineering materials. This project addresses nonlinear constitutive and kinematical effects as observed in low-temperature plasticity and high-temperature creep of metals, as well as in the large deformation of polymers. Microstructure Evolution and Localization in Manufacturing Processes: Shear localization in metals plays an important role in restricting the potential applications of several manufacturing processes, such as hot forging and extrusion. This difficulty is compounded by the presence of microstructural defects that may enhance, or delay the onset of localization during processing. This project is concerned with the theoretical development of constitutive models for porous materials, accounting for the evolution of the microstructure, that will be useful in assessing the effect of porosity on localization.
