The Hot Topic provides some links on the role of the media in current events, disasters, and on the history of the US, for classes exploring this event. On 11 September 2001, as people in the Eastern United States made their way to work, four planes were hijacked. Two crashed into the World Trade Center in Manhattan, downtown New York. One crashed into the Pentagon, and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The impact of these four events has caused reverberations around the world. The death toll is as yet unknown as rescue efforts continue, but it is estimated to reach into the thousands. The consequences are still being debated and discussed.

MATRIX/H-Net and the MSU College of Education bring Civics Online to the K-12 Michigan Curriculum
April 28, 1999 Imagine hearing Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech for the first time and pictures of the first Freedom Rides through Birmingham, Alabama. Or imagine listening to Franklin Delano Roosevelt address the nation through his Fireside Chats, and the resounding "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez" as the Supreme Court is called to order. Thanks to a grant from the Michigan Department of Education, MATRIX: The Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online, in partnership with H-Net: Humanities and Social Sciences OnLine, Michigan State University's College of Education, and Okemos Public Schools will soon make sound and images like these easily available to social science teachers across the state of Michigan through a project called Civics Online. "The partners of this proposal are committed to serving all populations in the state and all materials will be available free of charge. This fits squarely with Michigan State University's long-term commitment to providing the educational community high speed access to electronic resources on its networks," Kornbluh said. He noted projects such as the South Central Network Consortium where nearly one hundred school districts were given Internet servers and connectivity plans were developed to improve local access to electronic media and communications. To find out more about the projects currently underway at MATRIX/H-Net, please visit

Schools wishing to add to collection can use following lesson plan as a base for exploration. Current developments in technology make the ability to add on many other dimensions that were not readily available when this project was first done. Cheryl Vitali I. Introduction: A. The spirit of exploration is inherent in every person. The desire to discover new territories has been a driving force in mankind's history and development. Telecommunications brings new frontiers into the classroom, and gives students an opportunity to pioneer ideas and new ways of communications with people around the world. This year my K-6 students are studying the concept of pioneering in a cross-curriculum thematic unit that incorporates history, science, literature, writing, telecommunications, and personal awareness. They are learning to view themselves as pioneers in learning to utilize telecommunications. As part of our exploration, we are participating in a writing project with classrooms or individuals who are pioneers in their fields. An introductory activity to introduce concepts and build a knowledge base is needed. I planned an initial lesson using a story and discussion for this. Further development is done over a period of several weeks. I wove these objectives into subject matter and needs that I planned to cover in each groups time period. The time varies from as little as 10 minutes to an entire hour. Literature and exploration that support the pioneering concept are selected. Viewing CD's, videos, accessing information on the Internet, and other activities can also facilitate this. The time for the actual writing project is approximately one to two weeks. In addition, about a month is needed to find keypals (or classes) to participate with. Responses from keypals takes about a week. Time is allocated at least twice a week to share stories, discuss results, and collaborate on follow-up activities.
