August 19, 2002 News Release
NEA Develops 'Remember September 11' Web Site
Today, the National Education Association and NEA's Health Information Network released a new Web site, " Remember September 11 ." Designed to be a comprehensive resource site for teachers, educational support professionals and parents, it includes more than 100 age-appropriate lesson plans to commemorate the first anniversary of this tragic day in U.S. history. These study guides mirror themes of democracy, patriotism and freedom. Each lesson plan is geared to a specific age group: kindergarten through second grade, second through fifth, sixth through eighth and grades 9-12. Each plan also is divided into four chapters: one that encourages students to face their personal feelings and another that provides facts about terrorism and war. A third chapter, entitled "Do Something," encourages students to be constructive in their communities. "Does your school or community have a disaster plan?" it asks. A final chapter, "In addition..." includes more than 60 links to additional resources and support material. These links will include information on how Americans plan to remember Sept. 11, a debate on how to rebuild at Ground Zero, the current state of the war on terrorism and information for parents. A media section includes a schedule of major Sept. 11 broadcasts.

Curriculum Support We have developed lesson plans that allow teachers to integrate public relations into their overall teaching program.
Curriculum materials come from two sources. First, we have asked college teachers of public relations at the introductory level to adapt their lesson plans to the high school level. These lesson plans are included in this section and more lesson plans are under development. Our long term goal is to develop a high school public relations text.
The second source of public relations teaching materials will be those developed by communications academies themselves. These materials are also included in this section
We invite all academies to contribute public relations teaching materials to this program.

It is said that curricula in the United States is “a mile wide and an inch deep.” The following lessons incorporate theory with practical application. Not only must students learn the concept, but they must also apply it.

March 2000 EDO-IR-2000-01 The Field of Educational Technology: Update 2000 A Dozen Frequently Asked Questions by:
Donald P. Ely Educational technology is a term widely used in the field of education (and other areas), but it is often used with different meanings. The word technology is used by some to mean hardware-the devices that deliver information and serve as tools to accomplish a task-but those working in the field use technology to refer to a systematic process of solving problems by scientific means. Hence, educational technology properly refers to a particular approach to achieving the ends of education. Instructional technology refers to the use of such technological processes specifically for teaching and learning.
Other terms, such as instructional development or educational media, which refer to particular parts of the field, are also used by some to refer to the field as a whole.
The purpose of this digest is to provide background information and sources that help one to understand the concept of educational technology. This digest should serve as a "pathfinder" to relevant and timely publications that view the field from a variety of perspectives.

Media Literacy: Media literacy is the ability to critically question, analyze and synthesize media-based information. There is no way to prevent children from being exposed to media messages, therefore, the only answer is to teach children how to deconstruct those media messages. At OTC, we are especially interested in how we can help teachers transfer media literacy techniques and awareness to their young charges.
