Biomedical Science: Medical Microbiology
The medical microbiology department is concerned with the detection, isolation and identification of micro-organisms that cause disease in man. Any part of the human body, whether tissue or fluid can be examined, and these tissue or fluid swabs are inoculated onto culture media to allow the micro-organisms to grow after incubation. Tests are carried out to determine the identity of the organism, and the sensitivity of an organism to a range of currently used antibiotics. This information is given to the doctor who will make a decision on the correct management and care of the patient. The environmental section examines samples of faeces, food and water for the presence of organisms that cause food poisoning. The immunology section deals with the detection of antigens and/or antibodies present in blood samples due to infection with an organism or disease process such as Rubella or HIV.

    American Board of Medical Microbiology
The American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) was established in 1959 under the auspices of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) to test the expertise of microbiologists seeking to direct public health or clinical microbiology laboratories. Board certified Diplomates are adjudged capable to direct public health and clinical microbiology laboratories within their specialty certification. ABMM certification is recognized by federal and state governmental agencies as a significant component toward meeting licensure requirements to direct laboratories engaged in the microbiological diagnosis of human disease and is recognized under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act '88 final rule. The Examination Process The ABMM uses a two-step examination process. Consisting of a Part I written examination and a Part II Oral examination, the process challenges candidates to respond to practical and theoretical problems encountered by the laboratory director.

he Department of Tropical Medicine and Medical Microbiology offers courses for undergraduate, graduate, public health, and medical students. A major function of this department is to participate in the doctor of medicine program of the School of Medicine by providing tutorial and elective courses in medical microbiology, clinical immunology, molecular biology, and clinical aspects of tropical medicine. Electives for medical students are team taught and coordinated with unit objectives throughout the problem-based leaming curriculum. In addition, the department participates in the Pathology Residency Program by offering rotations in selected aspects of medical virology, parasitology, and bacteriology. A graduate program leading to master's and PhD degrees in Biomedical Sciences (Tropical Medicine) is offered by this department. Core graduate courses in tropical medical microbiology (TRMD 604/605) and a companion laboratory methods course including modern methods in molecular biology (TRMD 606) are offered in which all faculty participate. Students are encouraged to enroll in a core biomedical science course in molecular biology. The purpose of this graduate program is to prepare students for creative leadership in the field of tropical medicine. Applicants will be expected to have an acceptable background of course work in the life sciences (including microbiology), chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
