These court offices would each serve a limited and specialized set of functions so that the office-holders would themselve become efficient administrators in that one area. Most significantly, one of these specialized offices was the Exchequer , which oversaw the acquisition and dispersal of revenues for the crown.

When someone made a complaint of dispossession, the sheriff was empowered to bring before the judge twelve men who were familiar with the case. These men would then tell the judge what they knew of the case and would give their opinion as to the truth of the complaint or the defense. This twelve man testimonial would eventually develop into the civil and criminal jury trial.

Aspects of Medieval Culture Section one: Sex, love and power: Medieval womanhood In this course we will look at medieval women fictional characters, historical figures, writers, poets, mystics. We will take a brief look at the lives of some real women: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Marie de Champagne, Heloise, Hildegard of Bingen, Margery Kempe, and possibly Joan of Arc. We will try to determine the interplay of sex, love, and power in the roles assigned to women by the convention of courtly love, as expressed in Chretien de Troyes' Arthurian romances, parts of the Roman de la Rose , female troubadour poetry and Dante's Vita Nuova , the Lais of Marie de France, and Andreas Capellanus' Art of Courtly Love . We will also explore the written reactions of medieval women to those roles as expressed both by real women, such as Christine de Pizan, and by female characters created by men, such as Chaucer's Wife of Bath. >>Wetherbee, W. ... FILM In his book, the History of the Kings of Britain , Geoffrey of Monmouth conjures up a picture of a great unified nation called Britain: it comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland Writing in about 1136, Geoffrey says of this nation, which is a figment of his imagination, that it 'excelled all other kingdoms in its affluence, the richness of its ornaments, and the courteous behaviour of its population'. French connection When William I is crowned king of England in , he is also ruler of Normandy in northern France. As duke of Normandy, William is a vassal of the king of France. Because of wars, political alliances and dynastic marriages, England gains and loses various French provinces over the next 400 years. At the peak of its fortunes during the reign of Henry II , England controls two-thirds of French territory, from the English Channel to the Pyrenees. This includes Brittany, Anjou and Gascony, the total being known as the Angevin empire. But by the end of the Hundred Years War in 1453, all that remains in England's possession is the port of Calais. The French have won back control of their own lands.

Discussion of the Medieval era could not be complete without mention of the legend of King Arthur and his famed Knights of the Round Table. While Arthur was a historical figure, he may not necessarily a king. In fact, it is difficult to trace exactly who the real Arthur was. Many scholars today believe he may have been a brilliant military general whose prominence earned him a respected title among royalty. By some accounts, he became somewhat dull in his older age and allowed his advisors to manipulate him and his wife to betray him. Nevertheless, a multitude of myths and traditions grew up around Arthur. Camelot, King Arthur's town, was introduced to Arthurian legends in the 12th century by a French poet named Chretien De Troyes. It was in this mystical setting that the story of Merlin, The Knights of the Round Table, Lancelot and Guinevere were said to have taken place.
POLITICS AND WORLD EVENTS DURING THE MEDIEVAL ERA
The eastern half of the former Roman empire, called Byzantium, emerged unscathed from the invasions and wars of the fifth century. Emperor Justinian, whose reign lasted from 527-565, was perhaps the most prominent figure of his time. Justinian reconquered the western countries of Italy, North Africa and southern Spain, and in 555, codified Roman law in Corpus Juris Civilis. By 600, Byzantium was the wealthiest, most powerful and civilized city in Europe. Although Arab invasion after 632 stripped the empire of its outlying provinces, Byzantine recovered even to the point of imposing its culture and religion upon neighboring Slavs and visiting Vikings. its capital Constantinople was the formidable center of power of the Byzantine empire. Meanwhile, Rome rose to prominence as the capital of the Western half of the former Roman empire. This Western counterpart to Byzantium was later known as the Holy Roman Empire.

    The Middle Ages, 768–1487
    Nicholas Hooper, Matthew Bennett
In stock This book offers a highly readable account of warfare in Europe and the Mediterranean from the Battle of Poitiers to the Wars of the Roses. With an emphasis on superb full-colour cartography and illustration, The Cambridge Illustrated Atlas of Warfare: The Middle Ages, 768–1487 focuses on military strategy, debunking some of the prevailing myths of medieval warfare. Often characterized as an era dominated by lone knights and long sieges, the Middle Ages in fact had a military culture as sophisticated and complex as our own, with organized armies and a high degree of tactical intelligence. This complexity is detailed in maps, plans, and an informative text. Development of naval warfare, cavalry, and siege tactics are all covered, as is the nature of contemporary logistics and contemporary understanding of the science of warfare.
    Reviews

    The Wars of the Roses
After the Hundred Years' War , the kings of England got into a big fight about who should be king which caused a long civil war in England from 1455-1485. Almost all the aristocrats in England chose sides. One side was the Lancaster side, which took a red rose as its symbol. The other side was the York side, which took a white rose as its symbol. Both sides were descended from King Edward III , and so both thought their guy should be king. At the end of the war in 1485, a new family of kings took control, the Tudor (TOO-door) family, with King Henry VII . Henry VII was a very strong king, and he weakened the aristocracy so that he could stay in power. He made Parliament stronger, but not the aristocratic parliament. Henry VII worked mainly with the new lower-class part of Parliament, the House of Commons, rather than with the House of Lords. Main medieval history page
