Return to Courses Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Reading The Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Reading was established in 1%5 to facilitate and encourage interdisciplinary study at postgraduate level and to serve as a social and intellectual meeting point for all medievalists. It offers taught MA and MPhil courses as well as a PhD in Medieval Studies, and provides research training. In addition it runs a programme of visiting speakers, a Summer Symposium, and a special series of public lectures on art and architecture with guided visits to sites of interest. Since 1975, it has published the interdisciplinary journal Reading Medieval Studies and occasional monographs. The University of Reading began as a University College in 1892, receiving its royal charter in 1926, the only English University to be established between the First and Second World Wars. There are now 27 teaching members in the Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies drawn from the Departments of Archaeology, Classics, English, French Studies, German, History, History of Art, Italian, Music, and Typography and Graphic Design, and four visiting lecturers. The Centre's students come from a variety of backgrounds, countries and disciplines, factors which strengthen further its interdisciplinary ethos. The University of Reading as a whole has a long-established reputation as a popular venue for international students. As part of an agreement following the Battle of Agincourt, young Henry was to become king of France as well as England, succeeding his maternal grandfather Charles VI. With Henry V's premature death and Charles' death not long after, a power struggle ensued that caused fresh troubles in the Hundred Years' War. As an adult, Henry VI was extremely pious and at times mentally unstable. His weakness as a ruler and the ambitions of his wife, Margaret of Anjou, were significant factors in the genesis of the Wars of the Roses. Medieval Wars During Medieval times the practice of making a declaration before going to war with an enemy was started, this originated in ancient Rome and Greece. In the Middle Ages, during the feudal times, there were people called heralds who were sent to warn the enemy that there might be war. This type of warning lasted up until the 18th century. The Europeans in the West tried to deal with the frequent raids of the Vikings by coming up with a feudal system. This would mean that the aristocracy would perform mandatory military services in exchange for their privileges. The mounted knight would now be the dominator in Medieval warfare. The christian knight was now in the forefront of the crusades mobilized to liberate their holy land from the control of Muslims. The Hundred years war lasted from 1337-1453 between England and France. William of Normandy conquered England in 1066. Despite being poorer and less populated England won the early battles. At Crecy in 1346 French outnumbered English 2 to 1. English surprised the French with a new weapon called the Welsh Longbow which could pierce heavy armor at 300 yards. French crossbows and swords were no use at such distance. English forces also used the first portable firearm which was an iron tube mounted on a pole, led to the development of the cannon. Joan of Arc insisted she had received messages from God telling her to help drive England from France. She proved this to Charles heir to the throne he gave her armor, a banner, and the commended of soldiers. They rallied French soldiers and broke the English siege at Orleans (known as Maid of Orleans). They gave the soldiers so much morale they drove the English out of France.

Post WWII Late Medieval Lancastrian collapse and the Wars of the Roses 1450 Notwithstanding English reluctance to shoulder the financial burden of defending Normandy and Guyenne, public opinion regarded their loss as completely unnecessary. Henry VI's regime never recovered from the loss of credit. In 1450, Kent rebels under Jack Cade seized London and overthrew the ministry of the Duke of Suffolk (who was murdered while fleeing). In 1450 and 1452, Richard, Duke of York, challenged the government but he only managed to take control after Henry went mad in 1453. Henry VI's servants rallied under Queen Margaret and the Duke of Somerset, and moved against the Duke of York and his allies (after the king recovered his sanity). York resisted and defeated the Lancastrians at St Albans in 1455 as the struggle becameincreasingly embittered. In 1459, the Yorkists were forced to flee when their army would not fight Henry VI at Ludford Bridge.
