    Meningococcal Septicaemia and Meningitis
This leaflet describes the features of Septicaemia and Meningitis which are uncommon but can be fatal and can occur together or separately.
    SEPTICAEMIA
Sometimes called "blood poisoning" is an infection of the blood stream. Commonly caused by a germ called meningococcusSepticaemia is very dangerous and can be fatal even within a few hours. EARLY TREATMENT with antibioitics is vital but not always successful.
    WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Septicaemia starts with flu like symptoms often developing:
    • fever
    • generally unwell
    • vomiting
    • lack of energy
    • aches and pains in muscles and joints
    • diarrhoea
    NOT ALL SYMPTOMS MAY SHOW
The condition deteriorates with the development of:
    • Rash pinprick spots or larger purple spots which do not fade when pressed eg.under pressure from a drinking glass
    • Cold feet and hands
    • rapid breathing,
    • Gasping or panting
    • Loss of consciousness.

    Meningitis
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain. It is very rare but very serious, although if it’s picked up and early enough, most people make a full recovery. It can be caused by either viruses or bacteria . The bacterial type is less common. There are two main types of bacterial meningitis – meningococcal and pneumococcal. See also Meningitis C
    Septicaemia
Septicaemia is a form of blood poisoning, which may be caused by the same germs that cause meningitis. Septicaemia is very serious and must be treated straight away. The germ gets into the body through the throat and passes into the blood stream. In some cases, the germs multiply in the blood stream and cause blood poisoning. This may happen on its own or with an attack of meningitis.
