    • ANCIENT GREEK LOVE MAGIC
      CHRISTOPHER FARAONE
The ancient Greeks commonly resorted to magic spells to attract and keep loversas numerous allusions in Greek literature and recently discovered "voodoo dolls," magical papyri, gemstones, and curse tablets attest. Surveying and analyzing these various texts and artifacts, Christopher Faraone reveals two distinct types of love magic: the curselike charms used primarily by men to torture unwilling women with fiery and maddening passion until they surrender sexually; and the binding spells and debilitating potions generally used by women to sedate angry or philandering husbands and make them more affectionate.

EDITED BY IRAD MALKIN This book is a study of the variable perceptions of Greek collective identity, discussing ancient categories such as blood- and mythically-related primordiality, language, religion, and culture. With less emphasis on dichotomies between Greeks and others, the book considers complex middle grounds of intra-Hellenic perceptions, oppositional identities, and outsiders' views. Studying archaeological, historical, artistic and literary aspects from the Archaic period through the Roman Empire, this book illustrates the force and validity of ethnicity in history. Archaeological Dialogues Archaeology is undergoing rapid changes in terms of both its conceptual frameworks and its place in contemporary society. In this challenging intellectual climate, Archaeological Dialogues has become one of the leading journals for debating innovative issues in European archaeology. Originally rooted in Dutch archaeology, the journal now effectively bridges the gap between Continental, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, and Mediterranean archaeology. Archaeological Dialogues includes discussion articles, review essays and in-depth interviews, which encourage debate and critical analysis. Theoretically inspired contributions focus on Europe and the Mediterranean in all periods, addressing a wide variety of themes ranging from social and historical perspectives in archaeology, to the history of archaeological thinking and advances in methods and techniques.
    Cambridge Archaeological Journal
Cambridge Archaeological Journal ranges widely in space and time, focusing particularly on the role and development of human cognitive abilities as reflected in the religion, iconography and other characteristics of early societies. The journal seeks to promote debate and discussion on crucial issues such as the origins of speech and language, archaeological approaches to symbolism and art, and the evidence for early human cognition. Specific topics covered in recent issues include: shamanism and rock art; symbolism and intentionality in city-planning; perception and cultural expression in ancient Mesoamerica; and spatial order and patterns of deposition at Stonehenge. Printable version Archaeologists have discovered a range of artefacts that provide essential evidence in piecing together a picture of Iron Age Britain. The fact that these material remains have survived the centuries is the most amazing fact of all. Bronze model of an Iron Age man's face, decorating a bucket. Introduction What has survived from Iron Age Britain provides the essential evidence that archaeologists use to reconstruct all aspects of life during the period. The small amount of historical (i.e. written) evidence for the period was from a foreign viewpoint and only directly refers to some aspects of life in the last 150 years of the period. Thus Iron Age Britain can only be directly understood from the archaeological evidence: the material remains of buildings and settlements, and the things Iron Age people ate, made and used. But why has anything survived from the Iron Age at all? Most houses and other buildings were made out of timber and thatch.
