Ancient Mesopotamian History
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
O n Hammurabi's death, however, a tribe known as the Cassites (Kassites) began to attack Babylonian as early as the period when Hammurabi's son ruled the empire. Over the centuries, Babylonian was weakened by the Cassites. Finally, around 1530 BC (given in some sources as 1570 or 1595 BC), a Cassite Dynasty was set up in Babylonian. The Mitanni, another culture, were meanwhile building their own powerful empire. They were having a "considerable, if temporary importance"they were very powerful but were around for only about 150 years. Still, the Mitanni were one of the major empires of this area in this time period, and they came to almost completely control and subjugate the Assyrians (who were located directly to the east of Mitanni and to the northwest of Cassite Babylonian). The Hanging Gardens on the east bank of the River Euphrates, about 50-km south of Baghdad, Iraq, "has plants cultivated above ground level, and the roots of the trees are embedded in an upper terrace rather than in the earth. The whole mass is supported on stone columns... Streams of water emerging from elevated sources flow down sloping channels... These waters irrigate the whole garden saturating the roots of plants and keeping the whole area moist. Hence the grass is permanently green and the leaves of trees grow firmly attached to supple branches... This is a work of art of royal luxury and its most striking feature is that the labor of cultivation is suspended above the heads of the spectators."

ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA from ~3000 BC until the time of ABRAHAM (~2000 BC)
We cannot help comparing our present day knowledge with the history of Man that is presented in the Bible. Due to the work of scholars who have deciphered hieroglyphics and cuneiform writing which were engraved on tablets of dried clay, we can verify information about life as it was 50 centuries ago in ancient Mesopotamia . This is an interesting study where we see, as in Egypt's first official dynasties , periods of great spirituality, where people were pious and peaceful; then suddenly these were replaced by periods of great violence, when kings reigned who were adored as powerful gods... We do not intend to study all the kings and the wars between kingdoms and small states, but instead to concentrate on the virtues and moral values of the first known kings of Sumer, in order to compare these values and beliefs with those of other peoples of the Middle East at that time. It is also interesting to study the history of the common people, the politics and the attacks by invaders who lived around the period 2000 BC - the time of

This is how Philip Hitti puts human's existence in perspective: "The duration of the historic period of mankind, 5000 years, is but a small fraction of the prehistoric period. If we could compress man's age on earth into one single day of 12 hours, this literary period would begin at about 11:53 PM, the Crusades would have been fought about 1 minute 44 seconds ago, and America discovered about 55 seconds ago. But man's existence is in turn out of all proportion to the history of the earth itself. If the earth's age could be compressed into one single year, the first eight months would be completely devoid of life; mamals would not make their appearance until the second week of December; man would make his debut on December 31 at 11:45 PM, writing would have been invented less than a minute ago, Christ would have been born 22 seconds ago, and America discovered six seconds ago."
From The Near East in History by Philip Hitti, published by D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc.

    The Cradle of Civilization
I n ancient times the land area now known as modern Iraq was almost equivalent to Mesopotamia the land between the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates (in Arabic, the Dijla and Furat, respectively), the Mesopotamian plain was called the Fertile Crescent. This region is known as the Cradle of Civilization; was the birthplace of the varied civilizations that moved us from prehistory to history. An advanced civilization flourished in this region long before that of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, for it was here in about 4000BC that the Sumerian culture flourished Writing evolved to keep track of property. Clay envelopes Uruk in approximately 2700 BC, is a moving story of the ruler's deep sorrow at the death of his friend Enkidu, and of his consequent search for immortality. Other central themes of the story are a devastating flood and the tenuous nature of man's existence, and ended by meeting a wise and ancient man who had survived a great flood by building an ark. Land was cultivated for the first time, early calendars were used and the first written alphabet was invented here. Its bountiful land, fresh waters, and varying climate contributed to the creation of deep-rooted civilization that had fostered humanity from its affluent fountain since thousand of years. Sumerian states were believed to be under the rule of a local god or goddess, and a bureaucratic system of the priesthood arose to oversee the ritualistic and complex religion. High Priests represented the gods on earth, one of their jobs being to discern the divine will. A favorite method of divination was reading sheep or goat entrails. The priests ruled from their
