MESOPOTAMIA MESOPOTAMIA TIME LINE Mesopotamia means 'Land between the rivers'.
Mesopotamia is the oldest known civilization.
It is said that Mesopotamia was the place of the legendary 'Garden of Eden'. The word 'Mesopotamia' is in origin a Greek name (mesos `middle' and 'potamos' - 'river' so `land between the rivers'). The name is used for the area watered by the Euphrates and Tigris and its tributaries, roughly comprising modern Irak and part of Syria. South of modern Bagdad, the alluvial plains of the rivers was called the land of Sumer and Akkad in the third millennium. The name does not refer to any particular civilization using that name. Over the course of several millennia, many civilizations developed, collapsed, and were replaced in this fertile region. The history of the land and its people dates back more than to 7,000 BC. Mesopotamia has no natural boundaries and is difficult to defend. The influence of neighboring countries is large. Throughout the history of Mesopotamia trade contacts, slow diffusion of foreign tribes and military confrontations have been of great influence. Mesopotamia - the cradle of civilization - the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers, it is said, hosted the legendary Garden of Eden - if it existed anywhere. To emphasize this the ancient village of Al-Qurna singled out a tree ("Adam's tree") with a sign - in Arabic and English. On this holy spot where the Tigris meets the Euphrates this holy tree of our father Adam grew symbolizing the Garden of Eden. Abraham prayed here 2,000 years B.C.

Archaeology and Ancient Human History
"It seems no work of Man's creative hand,
By labor wrought as wavering fancy planned;
But from the rock as by magic grown,
Eternal, silent, beautiful, alone! . . . Match me such marvel, save in Eastern clime
A rose-red city, half as old as time."
from "Petra," by Dean Bergen The "rose-red city" of Petra in the Arabian desert is just one of thousands of sites all over the world that record human history in all its facets, both humble and glorious. Archaeology is the study of these sites, of prehistoric and early-historic human cultures and societies. Archaeology ranges over the whole of human history, from the first development of writing over five thousand years ago up to today. My archaeology and ancient-history books can be roughly divided according to the region they discuss:
Ancient history in general
These are general books about archaeology, such as textbooks, "how-to" books, and books that discuss archaeological sites from all over the world. THE ADVENTURE OF ARCHAEOLOGY*

90. Exhibits Collection -- Collapse
Explore the fall of civilizations in ancient Maya, mesopotamia, Anasazi, and the medieval African empires of Mali and Songhai. Learn about the archeological concepts of interpreting evidence and dating artifacts. Search for clues to what happened at the Maya center of Copan.
http://www.learner.org/exhibits/collapse/
H Why did this great civilization fall? The history of humankind has been marked by patterns of growth and decline. Some declines have been gradual, occurring over centuries. Others have been rapid, occurring over the course of a few years. War, drought, natural disaster, disease, overpopulation, economic disruption: any of these can bring about the collapse of a civilization. Internal causes (such as political struggles or overfarming) can combine with external causes (such as war or natural disaster) to bring about a collapse. What does this mean for modern civilizations? What can we learn from the past? Join us as we explore the collapse of four ancient civilizations. You'll learn what happens when a society collapses and how archaeologists find and interpret evidence. You can visit the Maya city of Copán and search for clues to its collapse. You can also try your hand at "garbage-ology" and study what trash can tell us about a society. Ready to get started?

RECOMMENDED READING ON THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST
A Guide to Introductory Readings on the Ancient Near Eastern World
A Collaborative Production of The Research Archives of the Oriental Institute The Oriental Institute Museum The Oriental Institute Museum Education Program Recommended Reading is a guide to introductory readings on the peoples and cultures of the ancient Near East. Some of the material included here ( Ancient Mesopotamia ) was originally published as the Resource Guide included with one of the three volumes ( Life in Ancient Egypt, Life in Ancient Nubia, Life in Ancient Mesopotamia ) of the Guides for Teachers Based on the Collections and Resources of the Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago (Chicago, 1996), produced by the Museum Education Program with the generous support of a grant from the Polk Bros. Foundation. We have made some additions and corrections, and slightly altered the structure of that Resources Guide for the purposes of providing this information on-line, and we expect to add additional material as needed. The Egyptian and Nubian lists have been developed by Emily Teeter in the course of many years of teaching and lecturing and will change as new material is published. In addition, we are planning to add more lists as we identify topics of interest to the public. We welcome your suggestions. This on-line version was coordinated and processed into HTML by Charles E. 97. Thierry Urbain's Photographs: Desert Archeologies
Photographs of architecture, archaeology, and landscape from the ancient mesopotamia.
http://mapage.noos.fr/urbainth/
The photographs presented here are part of a work process which, since 1985, is focused on architecture, archeology and landscape.
Situated in the Middle-East or in ancient Mesopotamia, these architectures have always appeared to me as hieratic and timeless locations open to fiction and human science in which geography and history might be presented as utopias.
The exotic often looks for the bizarre, the strange, in a word for the sensational and plays upon the chock of geographic distance... I prefer the intimacy of an interior vision: the desert which is at once an alibi and a liberator, a privileged place to know oneself.
One must be worthy of the desert the touareg tell us: during the voyage each is supposed to discern that which he has brought with him. Our innermost visions are tenacious and accompany us often in spite of ourselves.
All these ascetic architectures of remote places do not intend to be anecdotal, exotic or demonstrative. Conversely, their archetypal forms allow us to rebuild time and space according to our own proper desire and to superpose to the photographic reality the equivalence of an interior landscape. The image is not of scientific meaning but simply poetic. Architecture is not the object of a study, but rather it brings to light through space the lines and geometry. Poetry resides in sobriety of the location and the image, in their holy character, in the peaceful and calm atmosphere fulfilled by the presence of lifeless civilizations whose relics will remain mysterious.

Archimedia I- Architecture in Ancient Near East
The object of the Archimedia project is to allow students to understand what ancient buildings looked like and how they were constructed. It does this by displaying numerous views, plans and sections, as well as axonometric and computerized reconstructions of these buildings. The project concentrates on buildings from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia. It is organized according to each building, and includes a description of its materials and building techniques, followed by a visual comparison of all the buildings involved.

Now, I swear by the sun god Utu on this very day and my younger brothers shall be witness of it in foreign lands where the sons of Sumer are not known, where people do not have the use of paved roads, where they have no access to the written word that I, the firstborn son, am a fashioner of words, a composer of songs, a composer of words, and that they will recite my songs as heavenly writings, and that they will bow down before my words...... King Shulgi (c. 2100 BC) on the future of Sumerian literature. The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature is based at the University of Oxford. Its aim is to make accessible, via the World Wide Web, over 400 literary works composed in the Sumerian language in ancient Mesopotamia during the late third and early second millennia BC. At this site you will find a catalogue of these works, together with a Sumerian text, English prose translation and bibliographical information for each composition. New material and new user facilities are added to the site regularly. Although minor corrections will be made, no major changes are planned for the editions presented here until late 2004.
