Degree Programs in Meteorology and Oceanography
The undergraduate program in meteorology and oceanography at San Francisco State University (SFSU) is administered by the Department of Geosciences. The BS in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences is unique among atmospheric and oceanic science degrees across the country in that students in both concentrations take a common 25-unit core of coursework designed to investigate the interactions between the atmosphere and oceans. The degree has six emphases within the two concentrations with specific course groupings for students interested in either meteorology or oceanography. The emphases include several developing areas of employment (applied meteorology, applied oceanography and physical oceanography) as well as the traditional areas of preparation for careers in the National Weather Service and for admission to graduate school. The Climate Change emphasis is common to both the meteorology and oceanography concentrations. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has drafted a list of criteria to which major programs in atmospheric sciences must adhere in order to meet academic requirements. The curriculum for the meteorology concentration was developed on the bases of these criteria.

    METEOROLOGY (M.S.)
    18-MONTH CURRICULUM
    Space Weather
This program provides each student with a broad foundation in meteorology at the graduate level with emphasis in atmospheric dynamics, analysis and forecasting, physical meteorology, or general meteorology. Laboratory practice is used extensively in the analysis and forecasting classes, and computational methods are emphasized in some of the dynamics and physical meteorology courses. This unique combination of coursework and laboratory practice provides the student with the background for understanding atmospheric factors which, when applied appropriately, can enhance our warfighters’ capability to operate under various weather conditions as well as support the acquisition community to ensure weather effects are accounted for in the design of new weapons systems. Admission Requirements: In general, students entering this program will have an undergraduate degree in meteorology, physics, mathematics, or engineering. The basic requirements for admission are an overall undergraduate grade point average, GPA, of at least a B (3.00), a GPA on all mathematics courses of at least a B (3.00), and GRE scores of at least 500 on the verbal test and 600 on the quantitative test. Waivers of some of these requirements can be granted on an individual basis by the Department of Engineering Physics. General Requirements: The Master of Science with emphasis in meteorology will be awarded for the successful completion of a curriculum, which serves the needs of the Air Force and has the approval of the faculty as meriting the degree. Specific requirements include:

Weather forecasting and climate change : Meteosat seminar for journalists in Cannes
    21 June 2002
ESA PR 46-2002. About 25 years after the first Meteosat weather satellite, the first of the second generation (MSG-1) is to be launched in August. With sophisticated new instruments on board, MSG-1 will change the way we observe the weather.
MSG-1 has been developed by the European Space Agency, ESA, and built by Alcatel Space Industries in Cannes. To help them understand its advanced technology, ESA is offering the media an opportunity to enhance their knowledge about meteorology in general, forecasting techniques and the satellite's specifics. Media representatives are invited to Cannes in France for a seminar on 3 July. The new satellite can be seen in its clean-room environment, and scientists, engineers and mission experts will give thorough briefings on meteorology, forecasting techniques and climate research. The seminar will provide plenty of background information about weather and climate processes. Filming will be allowed and experts from ESA and Alcatel Space will be available for interviews.
